‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ is a really strong effort which gives a really refreshing take on the whole Spider-Man cinema lore. We aren’t given the whole Peter Parker origin story (with great repetition comes great boredom) and in actual fact the film satirises this itself on multiple occasions throughout. This story isn’t about Parker but instead Miles Morales. It’s a heartwarming and exciting story which is both extremely meta and hilarious in equal amounts. The humour is more self referential and partial fourth wall breaking rather than just the usual quips we are used to with Marvel movies, especially those focused on Spider-Man. The animation has to be applauded too for its pure uniqueness. We aren’t watching the regular Pixar/Dreamworks type of animation, this film really does look like a comic book and it works so well. Despite having numerous characters (from alternate dimensions) it never feels tacky or straying from its morals and true focuses. This 2018 film embodies the teaching that family and our close relationships are important and this is shown in all the central character’s storylines including Morales, Parker and even the villain, Kingpin. Overall a surprisingly great animated film which packs a colourful punch and is a welcome breath of fresh air into an overused genre.
