I would lie if I said that I was ever hyped up for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, even after all the commotion and watching it completely sweep awards season. And then I watched it.
I've seen and loved a various number of animation films, I've seen a lot of animation techniques and ways they were used to serve the plot and the film and I've for sure seen my fair share of superhero films, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse takes a saturated genre and goes to show a lot of people that there is no excuse for entertaining films to have lazy writing and directing, and to be films that, for you to enjoy, you have to turn your brain off.
There is such a unique yet completely fitting visual style that goes along with the story and they're so perfectly mashed together that the film never misses a beat from the start until the very end. It always knows exactly what it's doing, where it wants to go next and how it wants to make the audience feel. I would say that is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's biggest achievment: connecting to the audience. I'm 22 years old, yet I felt like a kid watching this, completely blown away by the bold visuals and riding the highs of joy the film would present to me like I've never seen something like it. And maybe I hadn't. This is an emotional story that is wonderfully voice-acted and that is flawlessly delivered to us. It is extremelly effective, the passion both directors poured into this project is tangible and there is no denying the colorful, vibrant, hilarious, heartfelt and fully entertaining journey this film ends up being. Not just a film for kids but also a film for adults who want to feel like kids again.
