]]>really don’t think there’s anything i can say about this movie that my friend jax hasn’t already said but every time i watch this movie i love it more and more. a PERFECT horror film that really just goes for the jugular and is bleak and mean and disgusting in the best ways. it’s scary, with some of the most effective jump scares in recent memory, and it’s a very hopeless movie. this demon is addicted to feeding on skye. we see it fuck with her so many times throughout the movie, telling us what we thought was reality was actually a hallucination or what we thought was a hallucination was actually reality. parker finn is just a genius with his camerawork. normally i find shots where the camera is constantly panning back and forth to be very bland, but it works beautifully here (especially in a flashback sequence). i saw the third one got greenlit as i was rewatching this. will 100% absolutely be sat opening night. just hope they don’t fuck this up because there are so many places you could go with that ending. parker finn managed to do what very few can—make a sequel that is leaps and bounds better than the first.

]]>ariana and cynthia really just disappear into these roles bc i genuinely forget im watching my favorite artist on the big screen
]]>"i'm not afraid. it's the wizard who should be afraid of me."
i'm completely floored. almost two hours and i'm still struggling to find the words. john m. chu just gave us the best musical adaptation ever created, that's for sure.
admittedly, i know very little about the world of oz. i'm a fan of musical theatre, but somehow did not know anything about wicked. hell, i hadn't even seen the wizard of oz for the first time until earlier this year. but, god, am i kicking myself for not diving into this amazing world sooner.
i really have no idea where to begin with this review. i feel like my biggest praises have to go to cynthia erivo and ariana grande-butera. these two just disappear into the roles. i'm assuming those of you who know me that are reading this are aware that ariana grande is my favorite artist. and all bias aside, she gives one of the best supporting performances of the year. her comedic timing is impeccable and i'm glad she gets a chance to show off her dramatic range here. and, boy, is cynthia a fucking powerhouse. every time she opened her mouth to sing, i got goosebumps. her performance is what makes or break the movie, and she knocks it out of the park completely. i can't think of any better choices for this movie's glinda and elphaba. don't be surprised if cynthia and ariana get oscar nominations (maybe even wins?).
the trailers all looked kind of dull and colorless, but i am happy to say that that is absolutely not the case. the trailers do not do this movie justice whatsoever. it's colorful. vibrant. warm. cold when it needs to be. and the production design is just magnificent as well. the set designers did a phenomenal job of bringing the world of oz to life. every set piece has so many little things that add up to make this bigger picture and it's just a visual delight.
i really liked the music production. it has just enough of a non-theatre sound to please the non-theatre audience but it's also theatre enough to please fans of the stage musical. kind of a pop production like mean girls did earlier this year. and the vocals on this soundtrack are just out of this world and astounding. ariana and cynthia's voices mix so well and even by themselves are just absolute masters of their craft.
and my biggest worry going in would be that this nearly 3-hour movie would feel a little long since the musical in its entirety is only about two and a half hours, and this only tells act 1. but this 160-minute runtime just flies by. not a single frame is wasted and not a single scene feels unnecessary or feels like it goes on too long. it's paced perfectly. i was captivated from the opening frame all the way through until the film's chill-inducing cut-to-black ending.
this was such a magical experience (no pun intended). i am so glad i had an audience that didn't sing at the top of their lungs for my first viewing because it allowed me to fully immerse myself into this beautiful world. i have a strong feeling this is going to be viewed as one of the if not the greatest musical adaptation for the big screen. i definitely recommend seeing this in theaters—especially opening weekend with a full audience. this very easily lands in my top 20-30 all time favorite movies. and you better believe i already have tickets for a rewatch tomorrow.
