“Do you want to hear a scary story?”
“Do I?”
“Um... do you?”
“Yes.”
“So, there’s this disabled kid...”
“This isn’t scary.”
“It gets scary, so there’s this kid...”
“What’s wrong with him?”
“He’s disabled.”
“That’s... not a thing.”
“He’s sort of lumpy.”
“You’re a terrible person.”
“...and he drowns.”
“A terrible, terrible person.”
“Then his mum comes back and kills all the kids that were responsible for this death, then they kill her.”
“Okay, getting better.”
“Then one of them gets away, but BOOM zombie kid comes out of the lake and drags her down.”
“Wait, there are zombies now?”
“So, a few weeks later, the zombie has grown up.”
“Zombies can grow up?”
“This one can.”

One of the most gleefully exhausting movies I can think of. 98 minutes of nonstop early 2000s horror-nerd mayhem. Not a single minute goes by without someone saying or doing something stupid and/or being tortured/murdered by the two icons on the poster. It's outrageous and yet deeply reverential of the hypocrisies of 80s slashers, invoking the poetry and the schlock, the cynicism and the innocent joy. I love the part where we see Jason's little murder island, and there's nothing funnier than Freddy launching a bunch of pressurized air canisters towards Jason, eventually propelling him into the air. Final shot is the icing on the cake.
There’s a scene where Freddy is tossing Jason like a rag doll against different objects and pinball machine noises start to play— like we used to be a proper country, when did we get so serious??
We desperately need more goofy ass movies like Freddy vs Jason in the 2020s.
