Shooting a movie on 35mm is cool. Announcing that you shot it on 35mm in an opening title card is deeply uncool.
-
My audience was dead and indifferent during every scene UNTIL they used an entire stick of butter to cook 3 eggs, at which point people loudly lost their minds.
-
Oh my god, you shot entirely on 35mm film? Should we tell everyone? Should we throw a party? Should we invite Quentin Tarantino?

"You dumb bitch."
Two cops walk into a room and find a woman handcuffed to a freezer with her pants around her thighs and a man lying dead on the ground. The woman cop immediately rushes to the aid of the crying woman while the man keeps his distance and says they should leave her lying there and wait for backup.
Later, when the woman reveals that she fabricated the apparent rape scene, we see the woman cop's stunned face. The audience laughs, derisively. They look at this woman, who saw another woman lying helpless on the ground, who probably imagined herself in the exact same scenario, who rushed to help the woman who had surely been through something unimaginably…

hey so this was insane!
overall I just hate when male filmmakers make their female characters evil manipulators who are hellbent on destroying men's lives and then pretend they're being feminist by doing so
this felt like it came from the pov of someone who thinks the me too movement started with good intentions and then "went too far" lmao
the scene when the two cops find the main character handcuffed to the freezer rubbed me the WRONG WAY

It may be too late to admit that I still don’t quite understand what 35mm is or how it’s supposed look.
-
HOLY FUCK
sound design, cinematography, performances, everything here is fucking INTENSE in the best way.
Its been a long time since I felt my heart actually racing with a triller and I found myself gripping my head with anticipation.
A brilliant use of non linear storytelling, playing tricks on your expectations and luring you in its mirror maze of sexy back & forth violence.
Shots baked in neon colors in ways I haven’t seen in YEARS. A thriller on 35mm holy fuck bro.
Genuinely a wonderful surprise and I can’t wait to see the discussions about every element.
That darling sure was strange hahahaha……….…
-
i imagine the casting call for the male lead for this simply asked for the most Paul Mescal looking motherfucker that they could find in America

I spent the first half of Strange Darling struggling to decide if I loved it or hated it. But I knew there was no in-between. I thought announcing that it was shot on 35mm was unnecessary. I had no qualms about the nonlinear structure. And I liked the cinematography and performances.
The trailer boasted about a twist, which was easy to figure out just from the trailer alone. But it felt like the screenplay was too focused on concealing said twist at the expense of characterization.
I love female antiheroes and villains, especially when they don’t look evil. Because growing up, it felt like female villains always looked the part or they were simply unattractive. But there were always so…

I appreciated the trigger warning for those sensitive to 35mm film.

imagine the most pretentious man you’ve ever met. imagine he had access to chat-gpt. imagine he was fully convinced he was the most clever screenwriter in the world. that is this movie
