For a film that’s almost completely incoherent for most of its first act — and seldom finds its footing after that — “Captain Marvel” is rather clear about its one big idea. Jude Law, playing an alien military commander named Yon-Rogg, mansplains it to his promising female protege as they spar during the opening scene. “There’s nothing more dangerous to a warrior than emotion,” he barks at Vers (Brie Larson). “You have to let go of the part of yourself that makes you vulnerable.” He’s Morpheus, she’s Neo, and this is the dojo fight from “The Matrix” if it were less visceral and more explicitly gendered.

While Marvel is no doubt viewing CAPTAIN MARVEL as a stride forward in the representation department - this movie is scientifically designed to appeal to those particular values - it's a massive step backward in terms of formal technique and fooling folks that these MCU pictures are anything more than feature length installments in a television series that will only end once humans have scorched the earth and there is no signal on which to transmit these products of the Industrial Cape Complex. unbelievable how they made a movie about imperialism is bad, that believing the military state’s propaganda leads to genocide and the displacement of refugees, and making the central character’s arc about rejecting the intrinsic faith of the state and fighting for what’s right, in a movie that is literally a recruitment ad for the United States Air Force. the irony is almost hilarious if it wasn’t so deeply fucking fascist.

Should it be enough that one of these is finally fronted by a female superhero who decides when and how to exercise her own formidable power? Maybe, but the movie surrounding her is an old-school MCU expository slog with almost zero narrative or visual idiosyncrasy. And don't even get me started on the obnoxious needle drops. A real step back after the last few relatively risky and weird entries. All that said I'd be up for it if the cat killed Thanos.
