What's memorable about this reboot/re-imagining is that it gets to the goods right away and sustains the energy throughout. There's roughly twenty-five minutes of goofy banter and vicious forest slaughter before the Friday the 13th title-card even appears, and then afterwards it essentially starts all over with a different set of college kids. That's how you make one of these. Full of dumbass characters, idiotic dialogue (any line from Trent is absolute gold), a cool lake house location, and Derek Mears going full-movie-monster with his portrayal of Jason. Tourist Advice For Visiting Crystal Lake
1) Don't go to Crystal Lake.
2) If you do go to Crystal Lake, do not play 'Sister Christian' at top volume on your ipod. Jason, who lives in and around Crystal Lake, feels that 'Sister Christian' is overexposed, especially in film settings, and that not enough attention is paid to Brad Gillis's amazing guitar playing on Ozzy's album of live Sabbath covers, 'Speak Of The Devil'.
3) Do not urinate on Jason's weed. Would you want to smoke weed that some 'Sister Christian'-jamming dude in an AT-AT shirt who was planning on stealing all of your weed peed on? I mean, you might, but Jason definitely does not. And that is some really fine-looking weed.
4) Do not mess with Jason's keepsakes. That is really rude. They don't belong to you and have what is primarily sentimental value. That includes Jason's mom's decapitated mummified head.

One of the 2000s classic horror remakes that has the advantage of remaking what's not a very great movie in the first place. Daniel Pearl shoots forests like no other, Derek Mears is quite large and intimidating as Jason and this has a pretty significant and hilarious body count of a variety of douchebag characters. The Veronica Mars dude taking an arrow to the skull in the middle of going "wew" on a speed boat definitely a highlight, same with the guy who won't stop shouting "your tits are so juicy, baby! you got perfect nipple placement!" during sex before he is macheted through the chest and shish kebab'd onto the back of a moving truck and driven away.

I had never seen the remake so it was the first film I watched from the the amazing new Friday the 13th box set from Scream Factory. I was pleasantly surprised. This remake is definitely not toned down in any way. Has all the sex and violence one looks for in these films. Quite brutal actually. And it looks great. Shot by Daniel Pearl who shot an incredible amount of iconic music videos.
