Genuinely unsettling. Longlegs had me right from the start with the first glimpse of Cages deranged killer. This movie has atmosphere like no other and the stylistic choices taken only add to the dread of the film. The ratio changes actually worked for me this time feeling restrictive and claustrophobic (I am often not a fan of this gimmick). For a movie so dark in nature I was very surprised there a couple of humorous moments, not that this is in any way a comedy and those small moments of relief quickly turn to fear for what is around the corner.
While the marketing was excellent, I had avoided all trailers leading up to it and had only seen some brief reviews and praise but the hype was still there. I went in expecting something along the lines of Silence of the Lambs or Seven, and while it shares the dark noir vibes this is completely it's own thing which I really appreciate. There are some minor flaws, mostly around the final act but I'm not going to stop thinking about this one for a while which I why it's getting a five star review from me. Definitely recommend seeing this with a crowd in a dark theater with good sound.
