The oppressive atmosphere is built so steadily and carefully, but for me the house of cards came down once Nicholas Cage was really revealed. I'm sorry to say that I found him hilarious, and not even the tiniest bit scary. He looked like a cross between Steven Tyler after too much plastic surgery, and an elderly Beast (like, Beauty and the Beast.)
I was disappointed that this turned out to be just another demonic/Christian themed horror, and not something more unique as the marketing hinted at.
I immediately was reminded of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure, and I couldn't help but wish for something as sinister and elegant as that film. The answer to this mystery is just too silly for what the excellently crafted atmosphere has you primed for.
The atmosphere is truly always cooking, so I kept thinking that actually, this was all just a fake out, and the truly scary stuff was just around the corner....but then the movie was over.
