I knew I was in for a true cinematic experience when I got two nosebleed seats in the second row and immediately blinded by the black text / red background burning into my eyes. Longlegs has been described by many as the next Silence of the Lambs, and for most of its run, the vibe is right on par. Maika Monroe plays a young FBI agent in the 1990s who uncovers a personal occult link to the titular Satanic serial killer, portrayed by none other than a very nerve-rattling (and cunty) Nicolas Cage...

And I definitely concur that the acclaim is well-deserved. Mostly all of this is crafted nearly-perfect; the cinematography quite stunning, the atmosphere of looming dread a character in and of itself. Of course, the twists and turns take a predictable path if you're a seasoned genre fan, and my single gripe comes in the form of a 'once upon a time' stylized expository dump that would suit the film much better if it were played as straight non-linear narrative. Yet at the end of the day, Osgood Perkins, son of the legendary Psycho actor, is a damn fine director that shows a ton of the love for this project and this side of the horror industry.

Wasn't expecting to see Alicia Witt or Kiernan Shipka here, but maybe that was my own lack of paying close attention pre-release. Thoroughly enjoyed the psychological-supernatural blend here, more than I normally do, and I think some of that is owed to the procedurals, performances, and pure evil spirit that always knows when to show off the bloody bits.
