Had a lot riding on Longlegs even beyond being a Nic Cage obsessor. Just the whole grimness, mystery, unsettling atmosphere that's been teased.
This thing is going to be in the modern circles for a long while, notably to perhaps Cage's most unique performance to date and that's truly saying something. We've seen him unhinged but never have we seen him unhinged AND terrifying.
Osgood Perkins nailed the entire look. Longlegs is suffocating in its visuals with the looming shots, grim decade of the 70's, the cold weather, and the unrelenting violence. I can totally see and agree with all the comparisons to The Silence of the Lambs. Longlegs borrows a lot of the foundation of that type of killer/detective relationship and for the similarities I didn't have qualms with that.
While I was obviously impressed with the piece I will admit it didn't stick the landing. That's what really held this back for me. Seeing a new side of Cage we've never experienced before was enough to make me dance with glee. Truly one of his best performances of all time.
