  • The Muppet Christmas Carol

    The Muppet Christmas Carol

    ★★★★

Slightly embarrassed to say this was my first time seeing this.

Overjoyed to know it will not be the last, in fact, a yearly watch.

  • Little Women

    Little Women

    ★★★★★

    Perfect movie.

  • The Harder They Fall

    The Harder They Fall

    ★★★★

A truly rip-roaring, effortlessly cool western with an ensemble of actors that understand the tone and commit themselves to having as much fun as possible.

Coolest movie of the year for sure.

  • American Gangster

    American Gangster

    ★★★★

    Peak Denzel IMO.

  • Spectre

    Spectre

    ★★★★

A couple of rewrites away from being god-tier. Ah well, Hoyte still shot the shit out of this thing.

  • Fail Safe

    Fail Safe

    ★★★★★

One of the many dumb rules I give myself when it comes to my Letterboxd is that I have to watch a film twice before giving it all five stars.

Today I am breaking that rule, because Fail Safe is flat out one of the greatest pieces of storytelling I have ever beared witness to. Holy fucking shit.

  • No Sudden Move

    No Sudden Move

    ★★★★

    I’ve had an epiphany.

Steven Soderbergh makes the most consistently satisfying movies of any modern director.

They’re not all great (though this one is) but at the very least I walk away feeling like my time was respected.

  • Spotlight

    Spotlight

    ★★★★½

    “Enjoy the party.”

Cardinal Law oversaw and sanctioned some of the most heinous acts a person could ever commit, and the church essentially gave him a promotion.

    Evil. Pure evil.

  • Miami Vice

    Miami Vice

    ★★★★

I don’t know who copied who, but it’s funny to me that this and CSI: Miami share a couple of needle drops in the form of Mogwai’s “Auto Rock” and “We’re No Here.”

I’m guessing the show ripped off the movie, but it would also be cool if Mann and I were both fired up for Horatio Caine at the same time.

As for the movie, I’m sure I’ll start singing its praises more after a couple watches, but for now it’s another Cool Crime Caper from Mr. Mann. Wish we got more of these over the last 20 years but oh well!

  • Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One

Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One

    ★½

The animation is balls compared to what it could/should be, the dialogue is incredibly lame, the changes they made are either flat-out weird or cynically done to add more action and the amount of puns/illusions to Harvey becoming Two Face made me want to kill myself. Oh you’re of two minds on something Harvey?? Such clever writing!!

After Hush, I have no faith they’re actually going to keep it to the original killer, which is exactly what you want from…

  • The Bourne Supremacy

    The Bourne Supremacy

    ★★★½

Still fun, but I’m not enjoying rewatching this series as much as I thought I would.

  • The Bourne Identity

    The Bourne Identity

    ★★★

More jumpy and uneven than I remember, still pretty cool though.
