  • The Godfather Part III

    The Godfather Part III

    ★★★½

    The Death of Michael Corleone

New cut, same problems. Sofia isn’t great and it needed Tom Hagen in the story. Fix those things and the coda likely would have been a bigger success. As is, it works fine.

  • Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

    Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

    ★★★½

Any movie where someone curses at god gets a pass from me. Too bad Chadwick didn’t do it in Latin!

    Adapt 👏 more 👏 plays 👏 into 👏 movies👏

  • The Godfather Part II

    The Godfather Part II

    ★★★★★

“Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.”

Michael Corleone pulls the world down around him. No one is safe from his rage.

The Godfather Part II walked so Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again could run.

P.S. The flashbacks rule. I’m just an idiot.

  • Sound of Metal

    Sound of Metal

    ★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Riz rules as expected, but as a whole Sound of Metal didn’t do all that much for me. Sorry.

  • The Godfather

    The Godfather

    ★★★★★

Watched as a lead up to Coppola’s new cut of III (which @mods should be on LB) and damn, what a picture.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: absolutely nothing beats a death montage.

  • Soul

    Soul

    ★★★★

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Soul is as insightful, clever, funny and necessary as I expected it to be.

It earns tons of bonus points for beautifully animating NYC, the cat body swap, the gorgeous score and getting some fresh perspectives and faces on screen.

Not sure why 4 stars was my gut reaction, but I’m assuming it has something to do with the fact I’m watching it at home.

  • Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

    ★★★★½

Daniel Stern must have major spine problems from carrying this entire movie on his back.

  • Catch Me If You Can

    Catch Me If You Can

    ★★★★★

This movie would have worked 99% as well without including Christmas as a central framework or whatever, but Spielberg put it in there to keep this bitch coming back every year. God bless.

  • The Vast of Night

    The Vast of Night

    ★★★★½

    This was simply terrific.

I love a good sci-fi picture and oh boy did this deliver everything I hoped for as well as plenty I didn’t expect.

Writer/Director Andrew Patterson’s debut is a rock-solid, eerie and above all, patient campfire story that had me sucked in from the first minute.

The tracking shot is a major chest-puffing moment, but what really sold me on him were the long takes. I love it when directors put the camera on someone and just let them do their thing.

Best movie of the year? Probably!

  • Home Alone

    Home Alone

    ★★★★½

    Slaps.

  • Let Them All Talk

    Let Them All Talk

    ★★★★

    Wow, this was really great!

I dug the score, the mysteries, the performances and the subtext. Soderbergh’s minimalist style has really grown on me since he’s come back, and here it’s at its most soothing.

  • Gremlins

    Gremlins

    ★★★★★

Stripes is a better villain than Thanos.
