The first thought I had after leaving the theater to see this for the first time was that I had to go again.
And spoiler alert for my top 10 of the year, it’s the highest placing movie I had only seen once before now, so now that they’re on even footing, figuring out how to order my top 4 will keep me awake at night. Worth it tho!
I loved Little Women even more the second time. Gerwig’s screenplay is just masterful in dialogue and structure,
a feat I’m sure I would have appreciated more if it was required reading in high school. There are so many subtle and great recurring threads and devastatingly beautiful lines that perfectly punctuate the incredible singular moments this movie delivers seemingly with ease.
The only thing I didn’t love was Jo’s final love interest, who felt underdeveloped and not a buyable match for her. There’s a lot going on metatextually so I may have missed something, but that’s just how I felt. He wandering through the school at the end with a hint of ending up with the guy instead of being with him already feels like what Alcott was trying to do. But honestly what do I know. I love the movie regardless.
I’ll miss everything.
