  • The Dark Knight

    The Dark Knight

    ★★★★★

Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos.

9 years later, The Dark Knight doesn't just stand alone as the best of its kind, it's a snapshot of post-9/11 paranoia and a state of fear that has engulfed American society underneath a "dark cloud".

Batman is the greatest superhero because he is the only one who can be the focal point of a movie like this without coming off as preachy or obvious. The diversity and depth of the characters…

    The Dark Knight

    ★★★★★

Coming up on 9 years since a thunderbolt hit cinema, The Dark Knight has gained, not lost relevancy.

Loss, regret, and bravery are put on the line. While most superhero movies approach these with tears and CGI explosions, The Dark Knight focuses on the aftermath. At the end of the day, what excites me as a movie fan isn't the act of throwing the rock into the pond, it's watching the ripples. That's where the real art lies.

    I know this…

  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    ★★★★★

"If it's bad, don't come back. I want to remember you all as you were."

There is an oppressive amount of sadness to this film. Winning the war wasn't all it cracked up to be. The game evolved into a neverending battle between spies and secrets.

    In short, a masterpiece.

  • Steve Jobs

    Steve Jobs

    ★★★★★

The two most significant events of the twentieth century: the Allies win the war, and this.

Steve Jobs is a masterpiece. There's no other way to say it. Immaculate plotting, confident direction, a half a dozen knockout performances and the best screenplay of the 21st century come together in one of my favorite movies ever made.

Sorkin, in addition to being my favorite writer of all time spanning every medium, writes a screenplay so good that it wasn't even nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Probably because the Academy voters realized that no award was prestigious enough for this brilliance.

    Bring it, Molly's Game!!!!

  • Steve Jobs

    Steve Jobs

    ★★★★★

    "I'm poorly made."

By now, this has to be one of my 10 most watched movies ever (this'll be 6 watches in the last 18 months) and yet, Steve Jobs still feels brand new.

I could watch it again right now and still be just as captivated as the first time.

  • Interstellar

    Interstellar

    ★★★★★

I honestly don't know anyone who thinks this movie is bad. But if I did, his name would be Josh, and he'd be my podcast co-host who I totally beat in an Interstellar vs Inception debate #rekt.

Thankfully, there are more Mason's in the world than Josh's, because Interstellar is a masterpiece in science fiction if there ever was one. The plotting is immaculate, the acting (sans Hathaway) is on point and yet again, Nolan's skill explodes off of the…

  • The Godfather Part II

    The Godfather Part II

    ★★★★★

40+ years later, the abortion scene can still astonish a crowd of a few thousand. That, my friends, is movie magic.

  • V for Vendetta

    V for Vendetta

    ★★★★★

Comic book movies don't get much better than this.

V for Vendetta, if nothing else, is a masterfully written, directed and paced political thriller that *surprise* has gained more and more poignancy as time has gone on. Politics, truth, and hypocrisy are wrapped up and shoved down your throat whether you want it or not.

One of my favorite scenes of the film takes place very early on when V gives his address to Britain. He tells them that he…

  • Batman

    Batman

    ★★★★★

Criticisms people make about this movie that I hate.

Jack Nicholson plays himself, not The Joker.

Wow, what's it like being a close, personal friend of Jack? Tell me all about him.

This is a Joker movie with Batman.

Incorrect. Both get backstories, are developed, albeit Bruce in a more subtle way, and have a reason to interact with each other.

    It's dated.

And something like Back to the Future, Jurassic Park or Spider Man isn't? Criticizing something for being dated is…

  • The Godfather

    The Godfather

    ★★★★★

Seeing one of my all time favorite movies on the big screen in my favorite city in the world is the best birthday gift I could ask for.

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    ★★★★½

A movie with this much hype mandates a second viewing. You just have to watch it without the anticipation of getting your 2 year long questions answered. That’s when the story presents itself.

I’m still less than 24 hours removed from my first viewing, but I feel like my opinion on this movie has taken full shape. More hardcore Star Wars fans should take a few extra days, if not weeks, before they form theirs.

    For me, The Last Jedi

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    ★★★★½

In the conversation for the best Star Wars movie ever.

Rian Johnson made a movie on par with The Empire Strikes Back.

    HOLY. SHIT.

    This is real life.
