Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos.
9 years later, The Dark Knight doesn't just stand alone as the best of its kind, it's a snapshot of post-9/11 paranoia and a state of fear that has engulfed American society underneath a "dark cloud".
Batman is the greatest superhero because he is the only one who can be the focal point of a movie like this without coming off as preachy or obvious. The diversity and depth of the characters in this world is an abundance of riches for any filmmaker. Any theme or main idea can be accommodated.
In the 60's, Batman was a liberated acid trip, the 80's and 90's saw him evolve from a dark, brooding antihero to an MTV-era, hyper-sexualized seizure inducing pop star. After 9/11 and a couple of wars woke us up, Batman got his groove back, reverting to the brooding, pissed off guy we all know and love.
Matt Reeves's possible trilogy has a lot to prove to this Bat-fan. It remains to be seen how he and Affleck will change it up after the character was Snyderized. If I were a betting man, I'd be confident in predicting that DC's ultimate megalomaniac will be reflecting his real-world counterpart from 5th Avenue.
