Definitely unsettling. Phenomenal cinematography and sound design. Killer performances from the entire cast, but Maika Monroe is absolutely the most standout aspect of the film.
I think the (genius) marketing for this set an expectation for me going in that the movie didn’t quite hit, which doesn’t make it bad, just different. Yes it was incredibly unsettling, and the use of the odd aspect ratio at times really helped with this, but I went into it expecting to feel a LOT worse coming out, similar to how I felt having seen Beau is Afraid. But this truly isn’t a ‘scary’ movie, it has its creepy moments, a very interesting and well paced story that at times makes you feel uncomfortable, maybe even a bit sick, but you’ll probably be able to sleep at night still.
Lastly, I’m not familiar all of Nicolas Cage’s work but I can still guarantee you’ve NEVER seen him like this.
I think without any expectations going in this would get a full 5 star rating from me, so I think upon a rewatch i’ll enjoy it even more.
