Jacob Brannan’s review published on Letterboxd:
Off the bat, I'm sure for a lot of people, this will not live up the hype that the marketing laid out for it. The final product also feels a bit different than what the trailers may have had one believe, where you were promised the scariest film of the decade. Others have already spoken how the horror of the film is not directly in your face, and something more of a slow burn that creeps up on you the more you think about it. It is by and large a film that makes you think about the notion that evil just exists, and you have to figure out how to live with that. What caught me off guard, in the best way, was just how bizarre of an experience it all was. I say it with sincerity that there were moments of weirdness that truly surprised me, and I had to marvel at for their existence in this film branded as, again, the scariest of the decade. There was a lot here I didn't expect from a movie with this much attention attached to it, and to be honest, it made me appreciate it much more...even though, again, I know it won't work for a lot of people (but then again, the stupidity and incuriosity of the average filmgoer isn't something that surprises me).
As for me, I loved it a great deal. There are moments where the slow burns do indeed feel a bit slow, but it all pays off in the end when it leaves you feeling nothing but dread inside. I will say, Nicolas Cage in the film lives up to everything that's been said about him, not so much his look, but his performance without a doubt. I don't think there's a poor performance from anyone here. Everyone involved here knew what they were doing and setting out to do.
