Oz Perkins is a filmmaker whose previous work has never really resonated with me, for whatever reason. But everything clicked into place here, and I truly believe this is a modern horror classic.
What makes a movie scary will always be different things to different people, and for me it’s that constant uneasy feeling this movie so brilliantly created. I never once felt safe during the entire thing. There was always something off. The constant looming threat that anything could happen. To me, that’s what makes a movie scary. It’s a feeling I haven’t really had since I saw Hereditary, and Longlegs fucked me up in that regard.
And what it did even better was take the story to a genuinely interesting place, with a few good twists — only one of which I saw coming— and a final scene that had me on the edge of my seat.
Not sure Oz will ever reach this peak again but I’ll be glad to watch him try.
