Summary[]

Yunyun is puzzled when Megumin brings the little black cat with her to school, claiming that it is her familiar. As several of her classmates crowd around the unnamed cat, Megumin explains how she has to bring it with her or else Komekko may eat it while she's gone. Pucchin though doesn't allow it in the classroom, until Megumin cooly claims that it is the wild half of her soul made manifest. She gets annoyed though when her classmates keep calling the female cat "Megumin", so they start brainstorming names for it, until they settle on temporarily calling it "Shadow" which Yunyun came up with.

After school, Yunyun takes Megumin to the trinket shop opened by the village blacksmith, who tries to sell them giant swords he wants to see young girls wielding, before proudly recalling how a noble girl liked the armour he made for her. Yunyun then buys a dagger she brings to school the next day, though when their daily contest that Megumin comes up with involves using it to stab between the gaps of her fingers, Yunyun chooses to give up instead.

As Megumin eats Yunyun's bento, she hears how Yunyun is still 3 skill points short of learning Advanced Magic, before revealing that she has 4 skill points to go before being able to graduate, when in fact she has more than enough skill points for Advanced Magic and is only saving them up for Explosion Magic. Pucchin then tells the class how the monsters around the village are becoming active and forcing him to round up the village NEETs into hunting, so they have to self study before they can leave early.

While then class waits until they can go, Megumin notices Yunyun reading books about how to make friends with monsters, fishes, and even plants, much to her concern. But just as Megumin is about to offer becoming Yunyun's friend, Funifura beats her to it. Later as the class leaves, Yunyun hears of how Megumin left Shadow at home that day, before going off to eat lunch with Funifura and Dodonko, though she then offers to share her bento with the starving Megumin.

When Yunyun wipes Megumin's mouth as they leave afterwards, they each express how the other can be easily taken in by awful men using friendship or food as leverage, which incites Megumin into challenging a fight that Yunyun backs out of. Megumin next returns home to find Komekko showing her a familiar puzzle piece she had played with outside, before finding as she prepares dinner a terrified Shadow put into the pot, thus decides to bring her to school from then on.

Interlude[]

It so happened that a few days earlier when Megumin was off to school, Komekko had at the tomb where she frequently plays ran into a high-ranking Demon looking like a big Goblin who identified himself as Host. As he busied himself with the puzzle needed to be solved before the seal on his mistress Wolbach the Evil Spirit can be broken, Komekko went ahead and put most of the puzzle together for him, so Host offered her food in exchange for her to complete the puzzle.

Characters[]

Differences to other versions[]

  • The manga skips the part about Megumin and Komekko taking a bath before going to bed the night after shopping at the blacksmith, though it later adds the part where Komekko shows Megumin a piece of the seal instead of just talking about her new "toy".
  • Host in the light novel initially ponders silencing Komekko, but decides against it when she thinks him cool.
  • In the light novel, the self study takes place in the school library, though a number of books studied and the part about the girls playing with rubber bands are left out of the manga.
  • Instead of Yunyun backing out, in the light novel the potential fight between the rivals after school is stopped when Bukkororii comes to strike a conversation with them.
  • Right before discovering Shadow inside the pot, Megumin in the light novel hears Komekko talk about a pale-looking woman who appreciates their father's wares leaving behind an order list.
