Reflection on Every Child Is Special

"Every Child is Special," also known as "Taare Zameen Par," is a remarkable

movie that explores the struggles faced by children with special needs. The narrative
focuses on eight-year-old Ishaan Awasthi, a child with the neurological condition
dyslexia. He can hardly read or write and struggles with letter recognition. Since he
doesn't grow up like other typical kids, people usually assume he's lazy, stupid, and
dumb. His father decided to transfer him to boarding school. Ishaan lost his confidence
and became distant, cold, and indifferent toward those around him. Until Ram Shankar
Nikumbh, a temporary art instructor, identified his condition. Ishaan received assistance
from Ram in coping with the restrictions resulting from his dyslexia. He received
appropriate intervention techniques such as continuous practice, exercises, and
problem-solving.

The child's first teacher is their parent. Parents are the people who feed their
soul, intelligence, humanity, and ability. They are also the people who give them their
first experiences in life. Therefore, it is crucial that the parent supports the child in
everything, but there are limits if necessary. However, I witnessed the exact opposite—
Ishaan's parents did not encourage him and instead made comparisons to his
academically gifted sibling. This film demonstrates that parents are imperfect human
beings who also make mistakes. It also highlights the value of the words and your
approach to teaching young children.

The film helps us both realize how important it is for educators to recognize and
value diversity. As aspiring educators, we ought to think about how critical it is to
cultivate an inclusive community and recognize the individual talents of every person.
Words have great power, so we should consider the words we use before speaking—
not only to children but to everyone. In addition, this film underscores the role of
teachers in shaping a child's future. Ram Shankar Nikumbh's teaching method
demonstrates the ability of educators who adopt traditional approaches to transform
learning. This fits with the idea that teaching is about more than just filling in information;
it's also about appreciating and nurturing the different talents that each learner has.

In conclusion, the movie is a powerful reminder that every child is unique in their
own way and that it is our responsibility as parents and future educators/facilitators to
bring the best of them.
