“Taare Zameen Par” (Every Child is Special)
Every child is indeed special, like Ishaan in the movie, who has
"dyslexia”, a disability in reading, and has problems understanding the
relationship between sounds, letters, and words, as well as numbers. It was my
first time to watch the movie, and it gave me a lot of lessons that I can apply in
the future or if I ever encounter a child like Ishaan. Knowing every learner will
be a big help in differentiating their learning styles, skills, and interests, and,
through this, a situation like Ishaan has, will be handled, and addressed well.
In the movie, the disability of Ishaan was not handled well by his parents,
classmates, and teachers. That’s why they’ve thought that Ishaan was just
lazy, but little did they know that Ishaan is smart, just like his classmates.
This kind of attitude towards a child who has a learning disability or disorder
must not be tolerated since it will just make the situation hard for both the
learner and the teacher. I felt disappointed when I saw how the father of Ishaan
ignored his son’s situation. Situations like this must be given time to help the
learner who has this kind of disorder. Time and perseverance will be the
gateways to a child’s improvement and enhance their skills and abilities.
Understanding every child is a must for future educators and for
educators who are already in the field. In this way, different strategies of
teaching can be integrated in and outside of the classroom or school.
Inclusivity for each learner, disabled or not, must be practiced, and every
learner must have the same treatment. I, as a future educator, should be ready
for this kind of situation inside the classroom or school. I should be sensitive in
every action or word that I utter towards a learner. I must allot time to know
my students’ capabilities, interests, skills, and knowledge through different
activities that will help me as their teacher to help them move forward and help
them improve in their studies and as a person. Also, allotting time to every
learner may help me to know their strengths and weaknesses, and it will help
me to inform their parents or guardians on how they can handle their child
who is struggling because of his or her situation. Learners with this disorder or
disability will feel at ease, which can help boost their esteem and confidence
since they know that they are seen and understood by their teachers,
classmates, and, of course, their family. One of the lessons that the movie
showed is to not scold a child with a learning disorder or disability; instead,
give them motivation that they can do well in their own way. Patience,
determination, and dedication of parents, with the help of the teachers or for
those of us who are not yet in the field, must be present to boost the confidence
of a child, and through this, they will not have self-doubt and keep themselves
away from other people because they feel like they don’t belong in the group.
Don’t downgrade a child who has learning disabilities; allowing them to
socialize with other people and allowing teachers to socialize with them as well
will show and promote inclusive education.
To conclude, the movie “Every Child is Special” gave a lot of moral
lessons, especially in handling a child with dyslexia. It is not just about
dyslexia, but also for those children who have learning disabilities that are not
handled well by the people around them. It is a disability, but we cannot spell
disability without ability, and from the title itself, every child is special, and
everybody has different abilities that can show that they are not different from
other people. Help those who are thriving to cope with the gaps they’re facing,
do not make them struggle more. Make them feel that they belong, that they
have a purpose, and that they matter in this world.
