Reflection in Every Child is Special

Every person has his or her own intelligence. Every person is unique in his or her own way. We
have our own individual characteristic and we learn in different ways.

The movie Every Child is Special is all about a child named Ishaan Awasthi who is suffering
from dyslexia, a disability recognizing the letters and numbers but has a passion in drawing and
painting. Because of his disability, his parents, classmates and teachers would think that he is
dumb, not realizing what he is going through.

There was one time where he was sent to a boarding house to be disciplined. And for this reason,
he experienced a separation anxiety from his family and his self-confidence was shattered. His
passion for drawing and painting was also gone. Further, he felt the rejection from his classmates
and teachers; thus, became aloof and cold to them. Until one time, a substitute teacher came into
their school named Ram Shankar Nikumbh. This teacher was able to see the special needs of
Ishaan. He helped Ishaan how to manage deficiencies brought about by being dyslexic. He used
varieties of teaching methods and techniques in order to address the disability of the child. Also,
he was able to boost Ishaan’s confidence and made learning fun by applying games to his
lessons. Further, he was able to uncover the potentials of the child and was able to bring back his
passion in drawing and painting.

This movie reminds me that in dealing with our students, we should always remember that every
child has his or her own way in learning. Since we have diverse students, we should use different
strategies, methods, techniques and approaches that would cater their needs and would address
their multiple intelligences. In addressing the special needs of a child, we should apply the
Connectionism theory of Edward Thorndike where he emphasized the Law of Exercise. This law
tells us that there must be a constant drill and practice for the student to have a continuous
understanding to every lesson. Further, it is a must for us teachers to make learning fun and
enjoyable and to let our students feel that they are cared and comforted. Let them be free to
imagine and learn in their own way. The most important thing is, whatever and whoever our
students are, let us not humiliate and judge them. We should help our students overcome their
fears, unveil their potentials and give the love that they need. This does not only concern the
teachers but also the parents. Teachers and parents should work together in addressing the needs
of a child.
