Amazing!
Just like any other Aahmir Khan movie I had watched, “Every Child Is Special” made me
cry buckets. And yes, who wouldn’t cry? It’s one of the most inspiring and touching movies of
all time. It’s one of those movies that just won’t be forgotten easily, a movie that will be etched
in a viewer’s mind, and a movie that surely will impart lessons about life, parenting, and
teaching.
“Every Child is Special” is about a boy , Ishaan Awasthi who was suffering from
dyslexia and the teacher Mr. Nikumbh, who changed his life. Ishaan had difficulty in recognizing
letters and numbers and could hardly read and write. His parents had no idea about his condition
and his teachers as well that they thought he was dumb and lazy. Because of that reason, no one
understands him, he felt different from the rest which makes him feel he was isolated.
The kind of relationship we build to the young ones greatly affects how they perceive
themselves and what they will become. The lack of patience, love and kindness and most
especially knowledge of one’s physical, intellectual and emotional condition can make one feels
unworthy and unwanted
Parents should love their children equally and learn how they should accept them
whatever conditions come with them when they were born and whoever they turn out to be.
Parents should love their child all the more when they realize that he did not turn out to be the
child they wanted to have. For a person still planning to have my own family and children in the
future, that lesson in the movie will not be forgotten easily. With that alone, my mind was
already awakened to the heavy responsibility of how a parent should love his child.
In the movie, Ishaan met Mr. Ram Shankar Nikumbh, a substitute art teacher, a great
teacher. A teacher who does not only teach teach but inspires as well. A teacher who is not afraid
to use unique and unconventional ways in teaching his pupils. With his persistence to help
Ishaan, he found out the boy’s condition and offered extra time to teach him in areas he had not
mastered yet. Furthermore, a teacher who exhibits a broad knowledge of Psychology in teaching
and using positive approaches in dealing and addressing students’ concerns. The teacher’s
persistence to truly understand the boy changes everything. From a lazy, dumb boy as others
thought he was, turned a very smart and gifted boy and an artist to remember.
Oftentimes we are blinded by the strict rules and high standards in meeting academic
requirements, that we fail to see the person’s worth. We believe that an underperforming child,
someone who can hardly read and write and demonstrate certain skills and knowledge in the
given situation is not worth of our time.
Every teacher plays an important role in the development of his/her students, just like in
this movie about how teachers greatly affect their students’ outlook in life, and how they
influence them. A simple show of care and understanding goes a long way, especially if that
child has undergone something, e.g., personal crisis in coping with personal incapability, family
problem, among other things.
We all know that children with special needs and normal children have a difference but
both have similarities. They can also play, has a talent, and has perspective in life but children
with special needs need to have more attention and extra help to develop their social skills.
Parents should have extra careful of their child because they have special needs to be attended.
Unlike with the normal kids they can easily gain friends and understand everything but special
child need guidance in their learning and it is difficult to them to mingle other people and also
need to be understood especially those people who really surrounded them. Every one of us has a
right in this society so they also have the right because they are belong on it. They have the right
to choose whoever they want to become and whatever they want to be in life as long as we guide
them and give them our attention. They must be respected also even though they have
disabilities. Their happiness and joy is the most important in their life.
Being a future teacher I must know and understands student’s needs, how they are
motivated, and how they learn. I should be a motivator, counsellor, inspiration, and a facilitator
rather than a direction. I must always prepared of different strategies and techniques in teaching
my students, by that we can produce a good product and I want to help that child to reach his/her
dreams. I should help the learner find their own ways of learning.
As a future teacher I need to have a positive attitudes and outside interest which helps
develop a well-rounded personality. We must help our students because they need a hand to
become better. We should also think that being a teacher is not just on the money we get but to
help children who are willing to learn, willing to participate and to help them learn what is real
life all about, they need our guidance to pursue their dreams. We should also consider the
feelings of our students we need to have collaboration with them to have a managed class.
Based on my observation, in handling a class it is not easy because they have different
characteristics which we need to be more observant on so that we can see who is really needed
our help. By doing like that it will be easier for us to handle the class and it will be easier to the
student to adjust the environment and to adjust the way we teach them because students already
know that we will be doing our best to make them feel comfortable when they are learning and
they already trusted us.
I also learned that going beyond the life of your student is also good because we can help
both our student and their parents realized that they should also need to have understanding to
each other because children also has the right. As a future SpEd teacher, I should have a positive
outlook and encouraging attitudes in order for them to be inspired despite of their disabilities and
also I should be open minded always and flexible to anything because in special children, they
had mood swings. I should facilitate my class in the right direction for the betterment. Nowadays
many teachers are just teaching because of money they don’t even value what they are doing and
that kind of teacher should be avoided because it is not a good example. The good example that
we need to follow is the teacher in the movie which Mr. Nikumbh who really do his best to help
a student who always get scolded and who is suffering from dyslexia. he is a good example
because he really value his profession he didn’t mind about the money but he mind about the
future of the students, the life of the students, he really helped the students to achieve their goals
in life and he also using different strategies, and techniques which can be helpful to us teacher on
handling a class or student. Being patient and know how to understand feeling is a great gift that
we can share to others. We need to teach them everything from the curriculum to the real world
because I do believe that children really trust teacher who is nice to them, whom they like and
most especially to a teacher who knows how to understand their feelings. That is why being a
teacher is not an easy profession because we have different roles in the life of our students; we
can be their second parent, friend, bodyguard, chef, nurse, even enemy, that’s why we should
value each of our student because later on they will realized that we are a big help to their
success, without us there is no, engineer, manager, nurse, lawyer, doctor, and many more.
Because teacher produces a good quality of students and also the teacher should be proud of that
because we make an effort just for them to be a successful one like us. Always remember teach
with all your heart not with the money you get.
Scott Hamilton, a humanitarian and a cancer survivor, once said “The only disability in this
life is a bad attitude”. Learn to understand and appreciate things out of the norm. Be kind, for
some people are fighting a really hard battle that you’re lucky you’re not going through.
