Answer no.7

Maintenance
- The manual cleats or dogs found on watertight doors have to be kept free to ensure

provided with grease nipple so that they can be greased out at regular interval

- The hard rubber packing provided on the tim of the cover or doors provides, the sealing
as it esist firmly against the lip of the door. These has to be regularly checked for water
tightness, there should be no paint marks on them so they elasticity and are no longer
compressible(they become real hard) they nedd to be replaced

- Rubber packing is readily available in different sizes and it can be fixed on the metal
doors by means of rubber solution after ensuring that the surface is well prepared

QUESTION NO 8

8. How would you go about freeing a universal multiangle fairlead-whose rollers have
seized?

Answer no.8

- There are other types of fairleads like the Panama leads that do not have any moving
parts and are quite common on board modern ship. They are either attachead to the
bulkarh on the ship side or maybe free standing in which case theunder deck area is
strengthered this is very favored lead by seafarers as to the rope or wire can’t jump
accidentally when underweight the Panama lead requires no maintenance except for
painting

- Rollers beam are another type of leads normaly used to ead the ropes or wires out of the
stores. They are normally placed at the entrance to the hatches inside to stores to lead the
wires or ropes out on deck or vice versa. This is prevents them from getting chafed by
the sharp edges as for other rollers this rollers has to be lubricated or greased throught
the grease ripple provided.

- All rollers require regular maintenance by way of greasing they should be free to rotate
at all times. If they become seized – they are normally heated up, opened, the bearings
and bushes charged and put back. Regular greasing then follows to maintain the rollers
free.
