Meme! To break up the monotony of depressing posts that I've felt like writing:

Step 1: Put iTunes (or whatever media player) on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line (or first and second line if it's completely impossible) from the first 15 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing. (instrumentals and mashups skipped, obvs.)
Step 3: Strike out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
Step 5: If you like the game post your own!

My choice of icons used to be a direct result of my fannishness. That faded when I noticed that none of those icons' subjects looked like me- not as a woman, and more importantly, not as a person of color. When I began to hunt down icons that matched my desired criteria I realized that icons featuring people of color, especially non-fannish icons, were incredibly rare and it became a sort of point I was making to acquire as many icons featuring black women.

I've moved back into fannishness a bit, but it's still more likely that I'll add an icon that features a female-identified person of color (though that is definitely related to who I most identify with in a given show/movie/book/etc and I can almost guarantee it's not going to be the white male lead).

So I was wondering, for those of you who icons/userpics are an important part of your DW/LJ/IJ experience, what decides your choices? Is it prettiness? Matching emotions/moods? Icon subjects that look like you? Pictures of yourself? Fannishness? A combination? Anything else?
