My Follow Friday was a bit heavy, so let's lighten things up with some fluffy TV!
Undercovers continues to be very fluffy and pretty.
Steven/Sam/Leo are adorable and should just get in bed, already. I also love that the boys acknowledge that Sam is in charge, at all times. femDom!Samantha may be my new kink.

There's very little more I can say than I'm glad it exists, a real breath of fresh air from the usual overdramatic fare (not that I mind drama, just that it's nice to know I can tune in to something easy to watch).
A lot of the complaints about this show is that there isn't enough tension or angst or drama or darkness. I get that it's fandom instinct to search out tension and ship it but it is possible to be fannish about light and fluffy shows.
I say bring on the sweetness. And now, there's a Dreamwidth comm @ undercovers.
All Undercovers related posts are welcome.
Merlin was all about the boys this ep.
It was also a recycling of every previous Merlin episode ever. A few samples, in no particular order:
Evil dressed up as a friend, check. Pretty title guest character with gorgeous hair, check. Pretty title guest character immediately smitten with Gwen, check. Pretty title guest character impressed with Camelot, check. Arthur crushing on pretty title guest character only to have Uther banish them, check. Pretty title guest character saving Arthur, check. Merlin fanboying the pretty title guest character, check. People trying to kill Arthur in a tournament, check. Inability to write to women in a scene together, check. Merlin using his magic in front of EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD, check. Arthur failing at checking his privilege, check. Servant lent to horrid guests, check. Bonding over dead parents, check. Pretty title guest character in Merlin's bed, check. Uther laying on the daddy issues with Arthur, check. Uther being an idiot about his damn laws, check.
Gwaine was pretty.
He had such great hair I was sure I was watching Legend of The Seeker for a moment.
He was also shirtless.

What I liked:
Gwen calling Gwaine on his tired but surprisingly charming game. I do love that she gave the teeniest wildflower in the world back to him. Kinda like "I see what you did there; I can't believe you're trying to use pick-up lines on me but you have pretty hair so we can be friends".
The usual complaints:
The writers really need to learn how to write ensemble casts. Morgana appeared only at the melee, blink and you missed her. Of course there was the obvious deja vu that was this entire episode. And continuity!fail, and character development!fail, and we go on and on and on. The expectation bar is very low, but I don't see why they do their best to stay right below it.

Date: 2010-10-04 08:35 pm (UTC)I loved the scene with Gwaine and Gwen as well - finally Gwen got a couple more lines than "I believe in you" etc. (even though it was related to a love interest once again ...). She could be such a great character and yet, somehow, she's been kept in the same place since the beginning of series 2. I desperately want some character development for her ;.;

Date: 2010-10-06 04:27 am (UTC)I get that she's written as the characters' support system, but lately it feels like she's just there for Arthur's sake. And Merlin when he deigns to remember her usefulness. She could be so much more, for goodness sake. There has to be more of a reason for her existence than "Arthur will be a good king, he will. He will." I also feel like they are criminally wasting Angel Coulby, who obviously has more range than lovesick and hopeful.

Date: 2010-10-06 11:25 am (UTC)Gwen is pretty much turning into a second Gaius (o.O) who only ever gets to say the same thing but worded slightly differently. It's nice that she believes in Arthur and is unwaveringly supportive of him - but we know that by now. I'm sure she doesn't go around all day and tells everybody she meets on the street only that - she's got more depth than that -.-! *sigh* ... I'm sorry, I didn't want to rant ... -.-

Date: 2010-10-13 04:15 am (UTC)Oh GOD, the underuse of Gwen is criminal. I don't understand why they'd waste all that character arc potential (I mean the understanding is that she'll be queen, for goodness sake, shouldn't we know more about what kind of a queen she'll be?).
