In 19 BBY,[4] the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker undertook a mission to Utapau to investigate the death of the female Jedi Master Tu-Anh whilst she was on the planet Utapau. While investigating, they discovered a Separatist conspiracy to create a powerful weapon using a massive kyber crystal. The two infiltrated the base of those dealing in the crystal and briefly claimed it, but it was later reclaimed by General Grievous.[6] The Jedi pursued and eventually destroyed the crystal, having learnt from Yoda that it was a powerful artifact of ancient legend.[5]

The finalized version of "A Distant Echo" later pushed "The Bad Batch" to the Outer Rim Sieges. Therefore, the events of Dark Disciple, which begin with the atrocity on Mahranee, occur after the mission to Utapau instead.
