The Google app for iOS now adds THEIR links to YOUR posts from YOUR website unless you opt-out.

Their links lead people away from your site and back to Google. Because that’s definitely what you want, right? That’s why you have a blog or portal or web site or whatever. You want people to leave your site and go back to Google.

Oh, it’s not?

If you don’t like it, you can “Opt out.” Opting out is a pain in the ass. Here’s where you go to do it. You have to enter every variation of each of your domains or it won’t work. It will take up to 30 days, during which time Google will continue to pollute your work and your writing and your website with their modifications and their added links to take people away from your site and back to themselves.

For example, here’s the list of what I need to opt-out just for this one blog:

solarbird.net
http://solarbird.net
https://solarbird.net
www.solarbird.net
http://www.solarbird.net
https://www.solarbird.net
web.solarbird.net
http://web.solarbird.net
https://web.solarbird.net

Yes, you explicitly have to file no prefix, http:, and https: variants separately. They say so.

Making it difficult like this is 100% intentional and entirely designed to make it as annoying as possible, and also, to make sure you slip up if at all possible and forget one or more combinations.

(Tho’ I am just going to depreciate web. as a prefix right now, to bring down the load a little. Still gonna list ’em, though, because spite is why.)

Right now it’s only in the Google app for iOS and it’s probably a test to see whether they can get away with it without complaint, and how much revenue it generates. Let’s make that a combination of no and as close to zero as possible. Because otherwise they’ll roll it out everywhere, and probably derank you if you don’t go along.

Fucking hell, Google. Fuck you. Just… fuck you.

Yeah.

Nice work, team “Peace President.”

Great fucking job.

Y’know… that was going to be all I posted but… I’ll go a little further.

One of the many, many post-world-war-II advances in global politics was the idea that offensive war was off the table. Conquest, previously considered a fairly legitimate reason for war, was taken off the table. It had been on the wane for a while, but the Great War had really set it back, and the second one finished it off.

That’s one of the many international consensus agreements Putin and Russia have been trying to destroy. The plan is literally to bring back old-school imperialism, where empire building through military conquest is the literal point. Empire building through force, the old way.

This isn’t “my read” of anything – they’re happy to tell you this themselves, using those words.

That agreement they’re trying to end served as a real restraint on powerful countries next to weaker ones. It actually did. Sure, you can talk about all the failures and exceptions, and that’s fair enough – there were many – but for decades, many decades, traditional conquer-and-annex empire building went off the table. Local self-determination was the theoretical law.

Team Trump doesn’t give a shit about any of that, and he just loves throwing his weight around, as long as someone else has to do the wet work. And now he has an army. Now he’s not figuring out if he going to deploy US military to Mexico, he’s figuring out how much US military is he going to deploy to Mexico.

Even if he threatens the Mexican government into giving him some kind of permission, it’s not going to be real permission, not actual consent – not any more than he gets from women before “grabbing them in the pussy.”

Oh I’m sorry, team Peace President, did you think he only did that kind of thing to women? Fucking fools, the lot of you.

Anyway, maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll end up being a bunch of military strike teams theoretically having authorisation from the Mexican government and with cooperation from local officials, some of whom will actually really want the help. It could happen.

I mean, that’s not showy enough for him and won’t bring the ratings he wants and that is literally what he cares about most, so I kind of doubt it. But if you’re going to do something like this, that would be the right way to do it. You could do that reasonably cleanly, as such things go. It would have the pretence of precedent under the post-WWII-rules.

So let’s hope for that.

Anyway, that’s “fun.”

This might be another event to be ready for, but hold your fire on. Nothing will happen for another few months, but hoo boy, if they go for anything more than the “right way” response, the downsides will be truly immense.

2025 looks like it’s gonna be a real stinker of a year, innit?

Be ready for it.

Today Anna and I upgraded all the servers in the servercore with MST3K in the background and had some pizza made by Paul and some pie made by a grocery store.

And it was a really nice day.

I am so pleased that (with the help of the Mastodon discord on that server) we got all the server OSes upgraded and back up and running and cleaned up some stuff while we were at it.

Just being able to… get some stuff done without it being a goddamn nightmare or a huge fight or anything. Just mostly sitting around and chatting some while upgrading stuff and getting things that broke working again without too much of a fuss.

could use days like this more often, not gonna lie

how was your day?

solarbird: our bike hill girl standing back to the camera facing her bike, which spans the image (biking)

November 16th, 2023, was the day I started logging biking miles per hundred on Mastodon. I didn’t check the odometer on the date this year, but it would’ve been around 2940, which means totalling 1,440 miles (2,317 km) in the previous 12 months.

That works out to about 28 miles/45 km a week or 120 miles/193 km per month.

That’s more than Anna and I put on our car combined, which exists pretty much entirely for certain cargo-carrying purposes. Not too bad.

The weather’s pretty good today. Cold, but clear and dry. I should run by the hardware store, pick up some copper and steel wool.

If you don’t know this already, copper is incredibly good for scrubbing oven racks, because it’s softer than the rack metal but harder than food, so it really cuts through whatever might’ve got baked on without scarring the metal underneath.

It is absolutely the best way to clean an oven or toaster rack is what I’m saying. I suspect that’ll be an important tip for some of you today, or tomorrow, depending upon how prompt you are about scrubbing up. 😀

Anyway, like I said, it’s a nice day. Let’s go bike.

Do you think calling Cheeto “Mr. 49.9%” would get under his skin?

I mean, that’s shaking out to be his final vote percentage. He still won.

But he didn’t get a majority.

I mean, it’d also work against the “mandate” and “landslide” lies.

Just throwing that out there. Whaddya think?

solarbird: (korra-on-the-air)

Hey team.

Been a bad month. But I’m still here, and I’ve been thinking about something and I think I should get it out there.

I think we should hold our fire on the economy with any Trumpy family or acquaintances we might have.

About bad economic news, anyway. Talk about how the economy had been improving all you want. That’s fine, ’cause the fundamentals are solid, unemployment has fallen through the floor, we’re finally seeing wage growth, Biden-Harris actually delivered the damn near mythical soft landing after the COVID economic nightmare and now that Their Guy is about to be back in office, magically the MAGAts think the economy’s a lot better too.

(Seriously: an over 16-point swing amongst Republicans on the state of the economy. Christ, it’s pathetic.)

But when it comes to talking about tariff-driven inflation and mass deportation crashing the farming and construction industries?

Hold your fire. For now.

Keep that powder dry, and wait.

I know. I know. You want to talk about it. I do too. And amongst people who aren’t MAGA chucklefucks, I will.

But to MAGAts? No. Until it actually starts to hit, every day is Shut the Fuck Up Friday. Do not catastrophise, do not predict.

Wait for it.

Sure, massive tariffs and workforce devastation will send food prices and housing prices and gasoline – the one they really care about – and everything else through the roof, but the key word there is will, not has, so I want to… but I will not say it to them yet.

(Prices are already spiking in some sectors, by the way. Just the possibility of another trade war is doing damage, just not in places they see it yet. I bought ahead a bunch of high-durability SATA SSDs because I’m fully expecting Trump to actually do all this shit, and they’re over 40% more expensive than last time for the exact same in-production models, and hon, that ain’t Bidenomics at work, it was the election. It’s adventure times for at least some number of data centres right now.)

So. Why am I not going off about this yet? Two reasons.

1: While I’m pretty dang confident he won’t, he could back down, point at the inflation he caused in specialised areas already and blame it on Biden, then when the tariffs aren’t as high as he was threatening or don’t happen at all he can take credit for not breaking shit and say the mere threat of his tariffs fixed everything.

That’s absolutely the kind of game Team Fuckface McSharttington likes to play.

He can also just not do the mass expulsions and say he did. He did that with “the wall,” so why not this too? I don’t think that’s going to play out that way either, since what he and MAGAttry truly want is an ethnic purge, and we all know it. But it’s still possible.

So that’s one reason, with two examples.

But I think – from a strategy standpoint – the second reason is way more important. To wit:

2: Unless and until it’s happening in ways even they can’t miss, all you’re doing by going off about it beforehand is giving them time to get their defences up and their denials ready. You’re giving them the forewarning to find someone else to blame other than Dear Leader, which they absolutely will do unless it hits them in the face before they’re ready.

So don’t give them that time. Keep your mouth shut about this. Go at ’em for everything else, absolutely. Make sure they know damned well what they did and that you do not forgive them – or however you’re playing it. Take all of that to town.

But on kneecapping the economy in both knees at once? Farm and construction labour and imports?

Wait.

Wait until it’s hitting them in the face.

Then, and only then, tell them:

This is what you voted for, you stupid-ass motherfucker.

Or however you choose to put it. However you’d personally phrase that. Me, I’m out of tolerance and niceties and if anybody complains my response would be something along the lines of “Oh, are you not playing ‘Fuck Your Feelings’ anymore? Did you get tired of that? Too bad I finally warmed up to it. Fuck your feelings.”

You could explain further, if you like:

We told you what they would do, they told you what they would do, telling you outright that little NPC shits like you would have to “embrace the pain.” But you absolutely refused to listen – even to them! – and now here we fucking are.

Reap the goddamn whirlwind. This is exactly what you voted for.

You jackass.

Or, you know. Something like that, only in your own, probably nicer words.

I may be clean out of nice words – not giving a fuck anymore can be kind of liberating, really – but maybe you aren’t. It’s your call. Make it however you see fit.

But either way…

…I’d keep this particular powder dry.

Dry, but ready.

Until it hits them in the face.

HEY TEAM WE’RE BACK

actually got power back yesterday but while a bomb cyclone is not a real bomb it can make a real mess just the same

I’ve got a lot of catch-up to do but we’re getting there. Kinda had to move some network and UPS bits around after coming back up and some parts honestly I’m not sure why. But everything’s behaving today so I think we’re good.

How’s your Friday been?

Massive windstorm this evening in Cascadia has taken out our power; we lasted, honestly, longer than I thought we would. But we are definitely now out. This should federate out to most of our followers, though, since we have like an hour of battery backup that we’re chewing through right now..

We’ll come back when power does. If you’re local, well, good luck out there.

Now that there is an actual mass X-odus happening – and it is real and it is happening this time – I’m telling people: Right now, anything is better than X. Anything. I’m happy you’re finally leaving, over two years after I said it was time to go.

But I also say that I wish people were going to Mastodon, or some other Federation/ActivityPub social media system, and I ask them to turn on the BridgyFed gateway, to keep communications open with those of us in the Federation. I have other reasons for that too, which I may get into later, but that’s the reason I give. All of them are equally sincere.

I did that enough times – always friendly, always encouraging, but consistently and persistently, giving my little speech – and someone finally asked me why. So I told them.

1) I have been writing for years now about how Elon Musk bought Twitter to turn it into a fascist propaganda and disinformation machine. I wrote most recently about that here, and how it worked in this election.

While BlueSky is not Twitter, BlueSky is akin to Twitter in if it gains traction, Musk’s successful experiment with Twitter will be repeated. BlueSky will be bought out and the same thing or something similar will most likely happen with it.

This literally cannot happen with Mastodon, or with anything in the Federation of ActivityPub-speaking social media sites in general, of which there are literally thousands.

(BlueSky’s latest round of funding is another cryptocurrency investment firm with strong ties to Steve Bannon, one of the primary authors of our current political situation and who is strongly allied with Elon Musk. To me, it seems all but inevitable that what happened to Twitter will happen to BlueSky. I could be wrong about that, but… well. You do the math.)

2) Mastodon is actually decentralised/distributed social media.

BlueSky may describe itself as decentralised social media, but it isn’t in any sense that actually matters. While you can set up your own domain of it, all that really means is that you’ve got your own local storage. To actually use BlueSky in any way – to post, to read other posts, to send messages, literally anything – it all has to go through BlueSky corporate. If BlueSky’s main instance goes down, that’s it for the entire service. Hence: not actually decentralised.

By contrast, if mastodon.social – the flagship Mastodon instance – disappeared tomorrow, literally nothing would change for anyone else. Every other instance of Mastodon would keep working just fine, with zero loss of functionality.

There is no critical core site to buy and bend to your will. These are thousands, and anyone can set up another. An Elon-style takeover cannot work.

3) Mastodon has achieved something no other social media network has managed, and that is to turn the Nazi Bar phenomenon against Nazis via an administrative level action called defederation. I figured this out a couple of years ago and it’s genius and it works. Here’s a post I wrote where I figured it out, literally mid-post. It’s short, but it’s sweet.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t problems in the Federation, because of course there are. There are fash and trolls and all those horrible things setting up and using their own Mastodon instances, too. But because they are quarantined into their own Nazi bars and nobody else will talk to them, they don’t matter.

If you set up a site and you let fash on? Every competent instance administrator adds you to the “nazi server” list and bang, their entire instance and all their users are completely irrelevant. No whack-a-mole. Poof. Gone. And since setting up an instance actually costs money – you have to buy a unique domain – the “create 10,000 troll instances” phenomenon costs too much money to make it work.

This does mean you have to join a good instance. Or if you set one up yourself, you have to do the extra work of getting a good blocklist and keeping up. Once you’re set up, though, it’s genuinely one of the least difficult and most rewarding parts of instance management. “Oh look, a fascist hive. Let’s blow it up.

Boom. Gone.

4) BlueSky is BlueSky. Every BlueSky is the same. It is a Twitter clone, more or less. It talks to itself and clones of itself.

Mastodon, by contrast, is one of several entirely different ActivityPub-speaking social media server types. It’s the best known, but it is not the only one, and they all intercommunicate.

Frendica, for example, is a bit like Old Facebook. There are an assortment of Frendica instances out there. Despite the fact that I do not have a Friendica account, some of the people who follow me are doing so from Frendica, and do not have Mastodon accounts. They see my posts, they can reply, I can reply back, and it all works exactly as if we were using the same social media, even though we absolutely are not.

I’m a member of a couple of Friendica groups… via my Mastodon account. I joined them from Mastodon. I can leave them from Mastodon. I can post to them from Mastodon.

I have never logged on to a Friendica server. And yet.

OwnTube is a distributed video hosting server. There are several instances of it. I follow a couple of OwnTube users from my Mastodon account. I see when they put up new videos, from Mastodon. I can watch them from Mastodon. I can reply to them from Mastodon, and even though I do not have an OwnTube account, my replies are visible to them as comments under their video.

I self-host a WordPress blog. It can be followed from Mastodon. Or from OwnTube. Or from Friendica, or Hometown, or Firefish, or Akkoma, or Lemmy (which is more discussion-forum like), or kbin, or GoToSocial, or anything else. You’ll see my blog posts in your social media account feed, whatever form that takes. You can reply to my posts from there. I see them on my blog as replies. I can reply back. You will see my replies on your social media instance.

No cross sign-ins. No changing accounts back and forth. No switching sites or apps. No weird permissions. No need for any of that, because they all talk to each other, and most of the time, it is utterly transparent.

Here’s a recent popular post on my blog. There are 74 comments. Other than the replies I wrote, all of those comments came from other ActivityPub-compatible social media sites. Some are Mastodon; some are not. They see my replies on their instances… of whatever they’re running. I don’t know and I don’t even need to care, because it doesn’t matter, because they all speak ActivityPub.

I have several hundred followers specifically of my blog, in addition to the 1500 or so on my Mastodon account. Most of them have never visited the blog itself, because they don’t need to. And yet, they’ve read all my posts.

That’s what the open social web actually promises – and, while it can still be kinda fiddly and weird… actually delivers.

There is more creativity in this space about what social media can be – for good – than in every other social media site in the world combined and it can be frustrating and it can be strange and it can be wonderful.

That’s why I think Mastodon is better – not in and of itself, necessarily, it has all kinds of problems even if I do like it, and run a small instance with 15 accounts. But I think it’s better more as successfully becoming a visible gateway to a much larger – and potentially truly better – social media world.

None of the modern online hellscape has to be like this.

It really doesn’t. None of it does.

It can be better.

And that’s why I care.

solarbird: (korra-on-the-air)

…but Europeans (and maybe Canadians), bear with me, there’s important stuff in here for you, down a bit.

Okay. So.

If you’re reading this, you’re most likely not who I’m going off about. If you’re reading this and have been working against Trump – I mean actively working against him – you’re very definitely not who I’m going on about. In fact, why don’t you scream along with me, won’t you? You’re welcome to join in. It might be… fun? No. Cathartic? Maybe.

Regardless, if this doesn’t apply to you, then it doesn’t apply to you.

But if you did help Trump into power? If you voted for him?

Jesus fucking christ, you fucking imbecile.

You moron. You clown. You fool.

Or worse – you contemptible looting parasitical fuck, because that’s what fascism is, that’s what the urge to loot, to take, to own the lives and labours of other is – it’s parasitisation, pure and simple.

You are not some kind of Übermensch. You are a leech upon the body of humanity.

I don’t know which you – as an individual Trump voter – you might be, but you either had no idea what you were doing (I think that’s maybe a third of you) or you’re part of the cadre who did think you knew what you’re doing, in which case, you’re still complete fools, because you genuinely do not know what you have done.

Particularly you, Putin, you evil old Soviet remnant fuck. You have no idea what rough beast you’ve helped slouch into power. Vladimir, do you truly not know what lies directly beneath the Trumpian surface? Do you think that barrier will survive his inevitable – probably natural, I should stress – death? Do you not know?

Because I do, and I have screamed to the nine hells and the five heavens about it, I will not reiterate myself here except to note that their plan for fundamentalist white man Christian domination of all aspects of society globally to bring about the end of the world is both well documented and explicit. I will say that you deserve it – but nobody else does. Their inevitable eventual failure will scar the planet. The only question is how badly.

Europeans who are reading this – you need to realise that amongst other things, you are now a military alliance. Keep NATO but throw the US out of it, at least, assuming you don’t want your American NATO participation to rely on staying in Elon Musk’s good graces and letting him set up fascist propaganda fountains in your countries. Arm up, and get ready to get your hands dirty, or rather, dirtier.

Keep Canada, if you can. Hell, bring Canada into the EU if they’re willing – I assure you it’s going to be very much in their interests if they want to remain Canadian.

If the UK actually come to their senses, let them back in too. If they don’t, get Scotland, if they wiggle themselves free. But be aware that if the Atlantic Current shuts down that those islands are going to get a lot colder and much more quickly than you expect. Fancy being Celtic Denmark, Ireland? Scotland… Celtic Norway? Nobody really knows, and I know no more than anyone else. But that and worse are well possible.

As part of that, get ready to deal with the reality that the US is going to shift into dramatically higher carbon output, not lower. Trump’s plans will undo what progress has been done – I’m hearing projections of that being by a factor of two, unless he wrecks the economy so badly that we go into demand failure and a second Great Depression. If we don’t, I suspect that’ll end up being a lowball estimate, given how much energy “Generative AI” is burning right now.

If you’re wondering, the only one who pretends to give even half a fuck in his administration is literal plaguemonger RFK, Jr., whose official answer is regenerative agriculture and whose unofficial answer is mass death. The funny thing about regenerative agriculture is it can be a legitimate carbon store, and at some real degree of scale! But there’s absolutely no way in hell that it’ll cover the new American flood of carbon dioxide. What with him being a self-deluded shithead, I have no idea whether he actually believes his shit or not.

But it doesn’t matter. We’ve blown past 1.5°C and we will blow past 3.0°C, and what Europe needs to do now is decarbonise as quickly as possible not to stop it, but to delay it some, and soften the blow.

I mean seriously. Look at the endgame of 66m of ocean rise. See what that does to your shorelines. See what that does to Paris.

If that’s somehow not enough – if you’re one of those millions of millions of people who pretend to care about climate change but don’t let it affect anything you do – then you also need to do it to prevent your own economic irrelevance, because carbon fuels aren’t going to be an economic driver that too many people give a fuck about in another eight years or so. China knows this. They make no secret about it, and they’re right.

By electing Trump – assuming he follows through on his evil promises – Americans have doomed their own country to either be a long-term economic laggard akin to late-coal post-industrial Britain or out and out economic irrelevance, hanging on as a militant fundamentalist agricultural state with islands of civilisation. And while you should never confuse the end of a Republic with the end of an Empire, Americans have more firmly ended the American Century than they’ve ended the Third American Republic.

I mean that. It’s over. The fallout will be nasty, brutish, and long.

Don’t believe me? Look at the reality.

If you have any goddamn sense at all, you know the Republicans long ago became a party that never met an ally they wouldn’t betray. For decades, there was consensus against that, but it’s gone now. Since America’s now highly variable value as an ally will depend entirely upon who wins the next election, nobody should be dumb enough to rely on it; you simply can’t form a foundation on that kind of ever-shifting sand. America’s great export was stability, and we’ve done run plumb out of that.

Accordingly, if you want to keep anything of the post-world-war-II world order – in particular if you want to keep the agreement that wars of conquest are not okay and that peoples have a right to exist – it’s gonna be mostly up to you, Europe.

And don’t make the mistake of thinking this is just the Christofascist right. It’s not.

American Liberals are absolutely onboard with the old global order, particularly but not only those parts. The left kinda sorta theoretically is onboard with those ideas? But not really. Even amongst the non-tanky American left, so very, very many people are way, way more personally invested in seeing Democrats lose than keeping fascists out of power. That makes their theoretical positions moot, and their operative positions the same as those of MAGA.

Over the last several months, I have come to a much better – or much worse – understanding of the “Bernie Bro to Trump” pipeline phenomenon. In just the last few days I watched someone I otherwise like … I don’t know if they’d call it gloating about Harris’s loss? But that’s what it was, posting about going at liberals to make them angry, enjoying it with a “hee hee die mad,” and most of all, blaming liberals for everything. Not the fascists, not the people who voted for him, oh no, it was “the libs” and “the Dems.” The ones who actually tried to stop him and keep him out of power.

Seeing someone so very clearly looking forward to liberals suffering under the boot heel of fascism absolutely repulsed me.

I don’t want to single them out, they’re far from the only one. They’re just the person who came closest to me while saying it most recently.

And the more that I watch that kind of shit, and the more I talk with people from the 2016 Bernie movement, the more what I see is a group of people who came in new to politics with enthusiasm, came astonishingly close but lost their first fight – as one almost always does, no matter who or what it is – and then most of them – not all, I hope, but the loud ones, most of the ones I’ve met – just decided fukkit, we’re burning everything down because we didn’t get our way the first time we tried.

(If you push them on it, they say 2016 was “fixed” because had neither Sanders nor Clinton won a majority of delegates it would’ve become an open convention, and the superdelegates would’ve become able to vote on the second ballot, and they’d’ve voted for Clinton, and that would’ve been cheating. That’s the “fix.” The stone cold reality that Clinton got more votes than Sanders and had an outright majority of regular delegates – she won that campaign 54-46 – doesn’t matter to them. Not really. Does that also sound familiar? Because it sure should.)

The real tragedy is that they took a near miss – one which was in a very real way a triumph and a dramatic showing of future strength – and tossed it into the bin. They could’ve built on it – it would’ve taken a while, but with enough determination it would’ve worked, and they’d’ve been a if not the dominant force in the party by now. Instead, well… here we are.

It appals me, but like so many things that are true despite my hated of it, I accept it as what it is. My disgust does not make it less real. Like I said:

I understand the Bernie Bro to Trump pipeline a lot better now.

The real shock horror of it all is that what I think needs to happen now is that the Democratic Party needs to move left. Sharply. Fuck, I thought it needed to move more left this election, and now that it’s not incredibly demoralising to the actual-anti-fascist political workers who were working their asses off trying to keep fascists out of power rather than sabotage Harris – I’m free to say that I thought at the time that Harris’s rerun of Obama’s “centrist” play was a big mistake, even if this election still had to run on the old rules for one last time for reasons I detailed months ago.

I understand Harris’s decision, and I understand why she did it, and maybe if I were a Black woman, I’d understand it even more. But it sure looked like a mistake to me. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t, maybe it would’ve been even worse if she hadn’t. I couldn’t change it either way so didn’t try, and we can’t know.

Regardless, what’s important now is that I’m pretty sure the Democratic Party really does need to move left as part of rebuilding. But I see all this post-election sneering and gloating on the existing Left, and I see how they hate the Democrats and “the libs” so much more than they hate actual fascists, and I don’t know what good it’ll do.

Nothing will be enough to bring this so-called Left – the Bernie Left – onboard. Nothing. Because the real motivator isn’t fix shit, it’s fuck the libs and fuck the Dems.

It’s a little like watching “South Park Conservatives” all over again. Trey Parker and Matt Stone once said that oh yeah, they hate conservatives… but they really hate liberals.

What they meant, of course, was that they mostly just hated liberals.

So here we are with “the libs” being the only ones who have been trying to keep a Republic for a while now, with a two-front war of the former-conservatives now-fascists on the right, and a left that in large part doesn’t give a single flying fuck about anything but their beautiful love affair with failure in everything except burning the Republic down to get back at “the Dems” for not nominating Bernie in 2016 and looking for any reason they can to make it happen.

Some of those reasons are super valid, though. In isolation. (And if only they were in isolation! Life would be so much better! But they’re not!) Because you’ve got the whole “complicity with genocide by voting for Harris” thought-stopping rage-trigger line and that actually makes sense and is right and just if and only if the person you help into power is on the other side of the issue and is not even more super invested in the same genocide.

And if you’re one of those people, well, guess what, pop-tart, he fucking well is super invested in that genocide – way more so! – and is also invested in another genocide in Ukraine, and wants to start a couple more at home on top of those, too! So ding dong, dipshits, you did not keep your fucking hands clean by helping him into office. In reality, what you did by helping hand him power is sink yourself up to your neck in blood.

Well done. Well fucking done.

There was no “hands all clean” route here. It wasn’t a goddamn option, and holy shit, did you blow it, and you’re still going to blame it on “the Dems” because you’re still mad about Bernie, even when he really, sincerely isn’t.

And all of that is a really very long and roundabout way to deliver the point I’m making, which is not to expect the Democrats to make a comeback real soon. The attempt to revive the Third American Republic has failed. I think the next opportunity to start something new might be after Trump dies of natural causes, not unlikely while still in office.

But all that’s just me guessing, at this point. Maybe the American electorate will surprise me at long last. Maybe Trump will trigger all the disasters his plans will trigger if implemented and people will go “oh shit, that was a bad choice” and Republicans themselves will revolt. Or who knows, maybe the American Left will get the fuck over itself like it needs to if it ever wants to mean anything at all.

I know, I’m hilarious, aren’t I?

But maybe. So if you call yourself part of that Left and you have any ability to pull your friends into the actual fight against the actual fash, and you’re going to try? You have my support and my gratitude. I don’t have the “fuck the Dems” cred to try to make any of it stick, when I try. Little old me who only has the experience of being actually illegal and routinely beaten down in the street just for existing just gets screamed and/or sneered at and told how I know nothing about oppression. But if you have that credibility, and have started to realise how completely the current strats haven’t been working, and want to do something about it? Gods be with you and good luck. You’ll definitely need it. If you can use my work to help, please do.

Or better, maybe it’s time to just start a different Left entirely. One that actually goes after fascists and Christian Nationalists more than they go after Democrats and liberals.

That really would be refreshing, wouldn’t it?

Something to consider.

Because seriously. Fuck those guys.

I’ve got more I could say. I could go off about climate change, and how absolutely nobody gave a single fuck about it in their voting decisions. It changed no minds, as far as I can tell. Not a one.

I really hope I’m right that oil won’t matter in eight to ten years. Maybe that’ll leave enough margin for saving civilisation. Maybe.

I sure hope so.

But I gotta tell you…

…I just don’t know.

Other than… maybe I do.

Maybe it’s time for a completely new Left.

Maybe that should start today.

Maybe that should start…

….with you.

You’ve made it this far. You clearly have some stamina or you would’ve already bailed, and I wouldn’t blame you in the slightest. This is a real horse pill of a post.

Whaddya think, though? Are you ready? Can you be ready?

Does it start with you?

Anybody got an over/under on “Trump picked Matt Gaetz for his cabinet in order to distract from his white-supremacist-tattoo-wearing Fox News Host pick for Secretary of Defence?”

Picture of the fuck and some of his tattoos )
solarbird: (korra-on-the-air)

I’m seeing a lot of people wondering how Elon knew.

Hours before the election was over, Musk was out there on X saying “Men are voting in record numbers” and that he and Trump were going to win because of it.

And I’m seeing people wonder how he knew. Saying it was because he saw some pictures of men in queues at voting site. Stuff like that. And I’m like…

People. For fuck’s sake. I’ve been telling you for years. He knew because they told him.

X is a fascist propaganda and disinformation fountain. But before that, it was also an information collector, and very much still is. Even moreso, now. X – and therefore, Elon – knows your politics real well.

But that’s only part of it.

The X app, like the Twitter app before it, requests location information. Almost everyone who puts it on their phone – their smartphone, with GPS – says sure, clicking through permissions if it’s even asked asked about at all. Sure. Why not.

This mean he knows where you are every minute of every day – at least whenever you have your phone with you – and that includes when you go to a polling place to vote.

Musk knew his fashpilled brosphere was turning out because they all told him where they were by having X on their phones.

Even more than that, if you’ve got X on your phone, and your state does in-person voting, he knows whether you have voted yet, because he knows if you have been to a polling station.

Those locations are public information, and polling results at those stations help confirm or deny X’s knowledge of your politics.

If you haven’t, and your politics are in line with his, I’m sure his algorithm will encourage you to get out there and vote. If you haven’t, and your politics are not in line with his, I’m sure it will discourage or distract you just as quickly.

That’s what his pet AI “Grok” is for, really.

Well, one of the things. That’s why he wants to unleash it on all your data, for “training.” What he’s training it for is to know your individual politics. If you still have an account on November 15th, that’s what’ll happen. He’ll set it off to chew through all your data, so it can encourage – or discourage – you to vote… properly.

According to the Law and Politics of Elon Musk.

And that’s what X is for.

This election showed the billionaires that this will work. I wouldn’t expect Bluesky to remain independent for all that long; at some point in the not too distant future, I’d expect some similarly-minded billionaire to buy it, too, and do the same thing as Elon.

To stop that, Elon’s experiment needed to fail. At the core of everything else, as I have said too goddamn many times to count, that is why Elon’s experiment needed to fail. Because if it doesn’t, it will be repeated.

People did not – adequately – flee X.

The experiment has succeeded.

It will now be run again.

I think I’ve squared a circle. Doesn’t mean it’s real; just that I’ve found a way to square it.

Walk with me.

Let’s say you’re Trump and you’ve promised mass deportations and huge tariffs on China and other countries.

Let’s say that mass deportation is incredibly expensive – maybe you’re aware that Hitler’s camps and extermination programme were eating 13% of Nazi Germany’s GDP in the middle of their wars of conquest.

Let’s say you’re also aware that this will take years and years and years, because there’s literally no way to do this quickly. Physically, I mean. 15 million people can’t be thrown out overnight, or even over months. It’ll be years.

Let’s also say you want to keep inflation down, particularly to keep prices from skyrocketing due to your tariff policies. Tariffs are, I remind you, a tax an imports that get paid by the importer, and which are passed on to the customer. They are inflationary, by design. At least, until and unless they torpedo the economy entirely, at which point, well, you’ve set off a second Great Depression, just like Smoot and Hawley.

Now, let’s say that it’s very important to you to keep wages down as well, because nobody wants to pay workers if they can avoid it. If you want to bring back a lot of manufacturing in an already-tight labour market, that’s going to raise labour costs. It just is.

So you assign an amoral monster like Tom Homan – author of Trump’s Family Separation policy – as the “czar” of immigration. He’s promising the largest deportation force in history and recently said his answer to preventing “family separation” is to expel the entire family – citizenship be damned.

(He’s also a contributor to Project 2025 and a visiting fellow at Heritage Foundation. Project 2025 absolutely is the agenda. All of it.)

Then you start talking to people you’re already very friendly with, the operators of private prisons. They are utterly ready and looking forward to the new policies. They see it as an opportunity to double – or better – the size of their evil industry in all its forms.

Your inner circle have already acknowledged you’ll have to build camps – lots of them, big ones. You’ll call them “prisons” or “detention facilities” or “military camps,” not “concentration camps,” you certainly won’t call them that. Let’s say “facilities.”

Prison “facilities” are already well known for requiring prison labour, and for their pennies-per-hour payment to inmates. Private prisons have pushed the envelope on this in many ways; prison labour is a profit centre. One I was working against, before the fascist era.

So.

Imagine, if you would, the very easy jump.

You’ve got to do something with these hundreds of thousands of imprisoned people, don’t you.

Imagine expulsions taking months, then years. Years at a time. Perhaps they stop working so hard on speeding up the process. Perhaps they slow-walk it, timed to, say, suit the availability of “facility” beds.

Of course you’ll put them to work. A rotating cast of “facility” workers – “prison workers” – worked slowly through the system so there’s no one there quite long enough to start organising.

Paid, technically. At pennies for the hour, as a token, a pretence that it’s not slavery. But, of course, it is. You recoup the pennies you have to pay by charging them for everything. Maybe even their bed.

And just like that you have highly profitable… North Korean-style labour camps, with entire families of workers imprisoned, for who knows how long while they are put to work as factory labour for the private prison companies which become the new internal outsourcers of zero-cost labour.

Slavery, though not by name.

Maybe you’ll tie camp expansions to increases in tariffs. Raise them in parallel, timed so that the internal outsourcing absorbs the cost of the new tariffs. And then look – no price inflation, no wage inflation.

And whole new class of people to look down upon forever, if you like.

It’s quite the plan. Very neat. Very clean. Given that Trump voters actively want “military camps” used against immigrants, it’ll be a very easy sell.

And very, very profitable. Slave camps always have been, really.

And all you have to be is an abomination upon the earth.

And all your supporters have to do is let you be one.

Is that the plan? I don’t know.

All I know is that all the pieces seem to fit.

I am not seeing nearly enough cishet men react proactively to this national wave of rape threats.

Most men listen only to men, particularly on topics like these. These men specifically only listen to men. Not listening to the opinions of women is the point, because as far as they’re concerned, we don’t get to have any.

Right now, these men are testing what they can get away with. They see but don’t care about how women react; if anything, they like the revulsion and anger, and look forward to more of it when they actually start “grabbing women by the pussy.”

But they do want to see how other men will react. They want to know what other men will say or do.

Passivity now, in the face of this, is permission. And your men friends are watching. If you don’t object, they probably won’t either. So if you’re against this – and you fucking well need to be – you need to get ahead of it.

And the next time, and the time after that? Every other time the fash test something? Because they will be testing everything they can?

It’s the same reality.

You have to get in front of it. Independently. Not just a thumbs up to a woman’s post. Preferably in your own words.

And you have to start right now.

find something worse than this

i dare you

satellite view of spokane street s. at i-5 in seattle, with a line drawn showing the pedestrian route, with several inset pictures showing locations, e.g., one stairwell that goes down to go under an on-ramp and then back up on the other side of the other on-ramp

it’s nowhere near me but i kinda wanna bike it – but i can’t (because those stairs wow) so maybe hike it

An appropriate response to someone saying “Your body, my choice” is to shoot them in the face.

To be very clear, I’m not saying this is legal. I’m most certainly not arguing that you should do it. Are we clear on that? I’m not saying to do that, I’m not saying it’s legal. It’s not, you will go to jail. Don’t do it. You’re almost certainly not even capable of it. Don’t feel bad about that; most people aren’t. That’s one of the reasons for professional armies instead of draftees; you have to get people who are willing to shoot people in the face, and most people just won’t, no matter how hard you train them.

But that statement is a threat of violence. More than that – much like the public adoption of naziism – it’s a promise of violence. And that combination of threat and promise is, “I will rape you, and nobody will stop me.”

And that is why shooting them in the face is an appropriate response. It’s an act of self defence in direct reaction to a direct statement of intent of to harm you with violence.

Again, I’m not saying to do this. I’m not arguing that you should do it, even if you can. You should not. You should not do this.

I’m just arguing that as a response, it is appropriate.

In Stand Your Ground states, I’d argue that maybe it should be legal, if you talk about the supposed intent of the law. You’re allowed to stand your ground, after all, to defend yourself against assault and threats thereof. Yes, of course I know that no Trumpist judge will ever support that argument; self-defense is for white men and no one else. But it seems to me this should qualify, even if it absolutely won’t.

So again – because I need to make this as clear as possible – I’m not saying it is a legal response, not even in Stand Your Ground states. It’s not a legal response. They will jail you. They may have the state kill you. I’d say it’s pretty likely. Don’t do it.

All I’m saying is that it’s appropriate. That it is a measured and proportionate response to a direct threat upon your body and quite possibly your life.

To my mind, after having done so, it is also reasonable to then repeat “your body, my choice” to their cooling corpse. After all, they’re not a person anymore – just as you were never a person to them – so it’s not a threat. But that does assume they are in fact already dead, so you would need to be very careful about that.

Not that I’m saying you should do this, either. I’m not saying that. Absolutely not. Don’t do any of this.

I’m just saying…

…it would be an appropriate response.

What America – mostly White America and Latino men – voted for last night in handing power to the American fundamentalist movement’s authoritarian leaders, scoping out from the most personal to the most global:

  • a rapist
  • making me and mine illegal again as people (via overturning Lawrence v. Texas (2003) via a now-assured long-term MAGA Supreme Court supermajority; see also Trump’s Agenda 47)
  • making talking about me and mine illegal (via the fundamentalists’ revived plan of banning LGBT people by making us illegal to be seen or discussed in public; this is also how Russia made LGBT people illegal under Putin; see also Project 2025 under “pornography”)
  • making my marriage illegal again (via overturning Obergfell v. Hodges (2015) via a now-assured long-term MAGA Supreme Court supermajority)
  • making most forms of hormonal birth control unobtainable (via reviving the Comstock Act), and illegal (by banning travel for abortion); this will mostly be Vance’s hobbyhorse
  • a mass ethnic purge in the form of Trump’s promised mass expulsion of “illegals,” which includes a whole fleet of kinds of very legal immigrants and refugees (via Trump and the Alien Enemies Act, last used to put people of Japanese descent into concentration camps, repeated constantly throughout his campaign)
  • an economic dickpunch caused by Trump’s planned policies if implemented as promised (according to Elon Musk, who supports this implosion and sees it as a good thing, saying Americans will have to “embrace the pain”)
  • throwing yet another ally – Ukraine – to its enemies, the fascist Russian Empire (via a fleet of Trump’s promises), and possibly the exit of the US from NATO (via many Trump statements)
  • authoritarian misogyny and racism, arguably revised into a new kind of casteism not that it really matters (via basically everything he’s ever done or said)
  • persecution of the press and political opponents (via repeated statements and promises; here’s a list of some of his top-level targets)
  • “illiberal” democracy, in the form of a “republic” where there are still elections, but the ruling party always wins
  • over time, the same kind of economic irrelevance as Britain (via swinging back to fossil fuels en masse, thus clinging to an obsolete economic driver in the same way that Britain clung to coal)
  • over time, the return of several kinds of plague (via making vaccination difficult to impossible, via RFK, Jr.’s stated pre-election intent to go after vaccines and Trump’s promises to let him “go wild.”) [I must note that today, he’s claiming he won’t ban vaccines, just end vaccination requirements (though not using that exact word, that was the meaning). Even if true, though, you’re still talking plagues. He’s also going after fluoride, saying he’ll be “advising” water agencies and companies of their “liability.”]
  • over time, 5.4°F/3°C of global warming or so (via Trump’s promises to “frack frack frack drill drill drill” on Day 1 and his many promises against zero-carbon/renewable energy.) We had ’til 2030 to cut carbon emissions by half; Trump’s second term ends in January 2029, assuming he lives that long. It’s literally an existential threat to civilisation, and how bad it’s going to get in the next 10 years will depend upon whether the Atlantic Current shuts down. Because it fucking well might.

If you voted for Trump, then you voted for all this, and I don’t know you, and clearly, I never really have, and you’ve never known me either, or, apparently, wanted to. If you think of me in the future, no, you didn’t. We’re strangers to each other. Let us never meet.

Everybody else… I’ve seen this year coming my entire adult life. Longer, really. I even had the years right. I gave half my life to trying to change this outcome, and I scored a lot of wins – some rather surprising – along the way, and yet, here we are, at the end of the Third American Republic…

…and I have no idea at all what to do now.

solarbird: (korra-fruck-out)
This exit polling graph tells me everything and helps me understand absolutely nothing:
Latino men voting 53-45 in favour of Trump, a 33 point swing from 2020.

Trump won Latino men 53-45 after campaigning for months on the basis of an ethnic purge against Latino people, promising to expel millions of people, and if you think that's only going to be undocumented people, you're out of your goddamn fucking mind and you have to know that.

Trump won Latino men 53-45 after a hate rally in New York City against Puerto Ricans, who are Latino, and who got the word out.

White women still voted for Trump, but swung towards Harris. It's stupid and it's evil.

But how the fuck do you win the people you're campaigning on purging?

Without this swing, I think I was mostly right. My higher hopes hinged on white women shifting more than they did, and they didn't, which is fucking self-destructive. But this... I just... did not see this coming. It wasn't in any of my calculations. It's suicidal past a level I don't know how to handle.

How do you get votes from people you're promising to purge?

And now I don't know what to think at all.

I’ve never done an intentional “liveblog” before, but since I’ll be glued to it all anyway, I’ve decided hey, why not. This is the liveblog root, and updates will be in the replies below, which are also Federated so you can follow along on Mastodon and other Federated social media.

I’m also going to experiment with reply threads grouped by topic.

How active will it be? That’s a dang good question, and we’ll find out. I’ve got a few items queued up already to start reply threads. Let’s gooooooooooooooooooo~~~
