I have not even started reading my way through the [community profile] ficinabox 2024 archive, but I can wholeheartedly rec the cornucopia of gifts I got.

I got two podfics, which was lovely, one of my fics and one of someone else's fics in a pairing I love. Both are delightful. Podficcers make such an important contribution to fandom, it takes so much work and time to do, and they don't get enough love, so please go listen and leave lots of lovely comments:

Air temperature 29 F after sunny afternoon, so there should be some nice patches of melt-water ice out there on the roads. Whee!

Our observance was nice, simple, quiet. That's the way, uh huh uh huh, we like it, uh huh uh huh.

About our only communication with actual humans during the day, other than postings on socials, was a short call to my sister and some texting with our friends who might've but didn't come to dinner. Most of the rest of the communicating yesterday and today from the world of autobots was full of fail.

First came a tezt that a small office item had come in for pickup at our nearby Best Buy. Even though the store itself was closed for the entire Thanksgiving holiday, I still could have claimed it because they are now using outdoor lockers for such pickups. You just need the code, which the text usually includes a link to. Instead, it just gave me this link to their website:

Clicking that little blue rectangle did not yield the code, either:

Um, it's hard to speak to a team member when the whole store is shut down. I'd timed this journey so I could listen to the annual Rochester broadcast of Alice's Restaurant, and pretty much hit this dilemma just as Arlo was getting to the line about "never having heard of a dump closed on Thanksgiving, so with tears in our eyes we drove off into the sunset...."

Or in my case, into the Wegmans parking lot for a few last-minute items while the final bars of the Massacree played out. It was especially poignant this year because the Alice of the song title just passed away a few weeks ago.

As we sat reading in the mid-afternoon, Wegmans would come to us for a change. A call came in  on my phone from an unknown number at 2 p.m., to us and thousands of other Shoppers Club members, just in time for hostesses in eight states to rip Grandma’s cucumber salad off everybody’s tables:

No, Siri, the translation was not useful, but the version that scrolled across my lock screen did explain better: it was  contaminated cucumbers that were promising a Salmonella Chanted Evening,  the remaining half of one of which was sitting in our produce crisper after putting the other half into a salad dish last week sometime.

I passed on my deepest sympathies to their Service Desk employees, who will now have to spend most of today handing out dollar bills and collecting poisoned pickles. We just threw ours out; the cashier gave me a free 99 cent reusable bag yesterday, so it all evens out.  At least two friends heard about it from me rather than from the store; one had just purchased one of their cukes, while the other served it at her Thanksgiving table yesterday. No reported casualties, yet, I'm happy to say.

----

No poison on our table for two. Also, no bird or other food coma spread. No football. Just us, sharing crepes and the World's Smallest Pumpkin Pie™ while watching this beautiful film streaming on Peacock.

Set between London in 1969 and that city and two other countries on the 2020 dawn of COVID, it's a story in three languages where love is the universal tongue with some sides of prejudice, anger and regret stemming from events a quarter century earlier.

----

Today was another of those Holidays We Get But Others Don't, and as with what happened with a settlement check to me back on the Friday the 5th after July the 4th, having today off caused me to miss something again. Not nearly as bad this time, though.

A few weeks ago, Eleanor noticed a crack in her windshield. Our insurance steered us to the national chain called Safelite that does minor repairs in your driveway but books the bigger replacements for their garage, closest to us being about eight miles from here. First they made an appointment to come here but then decided the crack was too big to just repair. Then, on eight mile drive #1 last week, they begged out when the replacement they had in stock was itself cracked.  They promised to reschedule for 3 p.m. today. I duly appeared at that place and time, only to find nobody knew nuthin about me or it. Calls were made. Turns out they tried to text me sometime yesterday or this morning to tell me the replacement was still not in and we'd have to reschedule again for next Wednesday. That text went to my office landline number, which you cannot text to. I imagine they also emailed me, but that also would have gone to my work email, which I have tried religiously to stay off of on this Actual Coupla Days Off. So now I'm looking for another glass shop to see if anyone can do this as fast, and accepting our insurance, before they break a FOURTH appointment on me. Another recommended place was closed for the holiday weekend today and is not open this weekend, so the soonest this will be sorted will be Monday morning, when it will likely be a digout from anywhere from inches to feet of our first snowstorm of the season, and when I already have a neuro appointment at asscrack o'clock that morning if the Snowmageddon will even allow me to get out of the house to it:P

At least Safelite hasn't tried to give us salmonella poisoning. Yet.

It has been a delightfully lazy day, although I've managed to actually accomplish quite a bit.

Mostly it has been a day of lazing around the house. Tuesday did a batch of sorting/organizing/the general sort of thing you do when you visit your parents, and I managed to grade one entire set of MiniQuizzen (only two more of those to go and then the project...). Karen and Tuesday and I went out in the early afternoon, while it was still plenty light out, and shoveled the drive and brought some yard furniture into the barn (after sweeping off the snow). I did not particularly help with any cooking, but I socialized, and then I read nearly all of Barrayar --I'll probably finish it before the day is over, which means I am rather doing Correct Things in terms of the whole "take a vacation and try to catch up on your library pile".

Meanwhile, Erik has been reading Karen "Guards, Guards" in the evenings as she does the kitchen chores, and while I could mostly ignore it last night, tonight Tuesday and I found ourselves rather invested and demanding a "no no, don't stop on that cliffhanger!" until he went on another paragraph or six. I've got a goodly number of the Discworld books on my ereader, and I haven't read the most of them1, so maybe that's about to happen sometime soon.

Tuesday and I have been staying up a bit too late, so hopefully tonight we'll roll into bed at a more sensible hour. Tomorrow there is zoom games with the extended family, and then Sunday very early we drive back down to Boston (and Karen and Tuesday onwards to Providence) with a load of things in the car. And then probably doing the rest of that grading since realistically, I might get the other quizzen but I'm not getting the projects in any world with a priority of relaxation.

It feels rather closer to how life is supposed to be, lounging in front of fires and reading and being read to and petting the cat and occasionally deigning to eat a bit of pie.

It's been a very busy day. Mostly in a good way, but still busy and with little time between things. Let's see:

* I had a friend visiting in the morning. He brought breakfast and sat here for a couple of hours. We talked and had a nice time together. When he was supposed to go back home, he didn't really want to leave, so I ended up going with him back to his place. We said goodbye outside his door rather than mine, which was nice.

* While I was already out, I decided to finally go to the hairdresser. I've been saying I need a haircut for a few weeks already, but more recently I also started thinking about dyeing my hair again. Now I have black hair... and a haircut I'm not 100% sure I like, but I'll probably like it more once I've washed and styled the new hair by myself a couple of times.

* In the evening, we went to celebrate my cousin's birthday in a restaurant. The food was delicious, and getting to spend a few hours with him and his wife was good, too.

* In other news, I'm about to go on my first flight on my own. In a few days' time, I'm off to the UK for the second time this year. I'm flying to London, and then I'm going to get on a train and go to Leicester to see the snooker shoot-out. Which, if all goes well, should also mean that I'll get to see a certain Mark Selby play in person. Well, he's the most important one, but Iulian Boiko is playing as well. And Michael Holt. And Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, though he needs to win a match first, if I'm going to be able to see him - I didn't buy a ticket for the first day of the tournament, as my biggest favourites don't play until Day 2 anyway.

Happy holidays!

Hi, all! I'm Lily from Florida and I've been participating here for years! I hope everyone has had a safe and happy year and holiday season! These are my wishes for this year--

1. Pokemon and Magic The Gathering booster packs, Japanese or English! I'm not picky about sets, I just enjoy opening them when I'm feeling down.
2. New friends! I lost one of my closest friends due to a difficult personal situation, so I could use more! Main fandoms are Pokemon, A Song of Ice and Fire, Mass Effect, Persona and other stuff.
3. More Dreamwidth paid time!
4. Amazon gift cards! Since I'm disabled, it helps me pay for the stuff I need and would be much appreciated.
5. Bluetooth speakers for my record player!
6. Pokemon merch! Big fan of Vaporeon and Glaceon!
7. Persona 5 Royal! I play on the PS5 and Switch!
8. Nintendo eShop gift cards!
9. Pokemon White for the Nintendo DS!

Thank you all!

I had plans to do some things this afternoon and became sidetracked by working on the new computer. The good news is that the new computer is creeping up on being ready to go. There are probably still a bunch of files on the old computer that need to be copied over, but I'm definitely in the vicinity of done.

Until I find the next thing that I've forgotten to install...

I was in so much pain last night that I actually slept out most of today and still feel vague and hollow, although at least I don't have to worry about dinner for several days.

It only took me thirty years out of my life to realize that the four later, more closely tied books of The Dark Is Rising Sequence are the quarter-years: the winter solstice for The Dark Is Rising (1973), obviously, and midsummer for Silver on the Tree (1977), but Greenwitch (1974) occurs over the Easter holidays and The Grey King (1975) on either side of All Hallows' Eve. I was assured of not forgetting the latter thanks to the day of the dead when the year too dies, besides which it is the most haunted of the novels, but in the former I always remember the descent of the Wild Magic on Trewissick more than the actual making of the Greenwitch, even though it is textually identified as a pre-Christian spring rite, for fruitfulness of harvest and fishing and the wishes of the women who make it. Over Sea, Under Stone (1965) feels like even more of a prologue not merely because of the gap in time and style, but because it is outside of this pattern which is not actually ordered sequentially—winter, spring, fall, then at last summer—but is still vivid enough in the narrative that it feels stamped in the quartered circle of the sign of the Light, which is not in any case linear with Cooper's handling of time. As with everything else I read as a child, different pieces come into focus over the years. In this case, it feels like stepping back far enough to see the field-spanning cropmark.

I forgot to mention it last week, but we passed Minnesota's annual virtue signaling spectacle. We call it "Give To The Max" day. I forgot about it entirely until I saw it on the evening news last week. I just hastily copied my donation chart from last year and used the same pattern of giving this year.

I encourage donating time if you can (and money if you can't) to the charities that matter most to you. I expect the needs to increase again, since that trend isn't changing. Locally, there was increased need last year and again this year.

I just got back from my first physical therapy session at the hospital. The therapist was brilliant, showing me the suspected cause of my left leg troubles in a way that was very easy to understand. There's a nerve that wraps around a vein in the back of the leg near the surface. It's at the same spot where I have my troubles.

They gave me some exercises to "floss" that nerve and improve lubrication in that area. I'm supposed to see them for therapy sessions for a few weeks on Thursday afternoons. I easily walked (very slight limp) the 2-3 blocks from my house to the bus stop and back, so this schedule is reasonable.

After Saturday, I start my new work week. My new schedule is Sun-Thu 10am-7pm Eastern. I'll already have to start using sick time on Thursdays in my new schedule. Which is fine. I'm probably maxed out anyway.
