visitors

We have a visitor at the lair! So I’m a bit distracted at the moment. Also, I’ve been doing a little field recording of interesting sounds – rain, pottery breaking, glass breaking like gunshots, things like that. It’s fun!

I’m going out with Leannan Sidhe in a couple of weeks to do more serious field recordings, and I’m very new at all of this, so that will be educational.

But yeah, busy. So have a little landscape photo I shot the other day. I liked the layer of petals in the grass.

I haven’t posted a flower picture in a while. I like it when flowering plants grow together like this. Click to enlarge:

It’s a nice rainy day after a day of big thunderstorms – so desperately needed – and I thought this was a particularly nice ladder fungus. Bigger at Flickr as usual.

Bee

Taken on the way home from one of several appointments yesterday. Nothing interesting, unfortunately. So, a flower picture it is. And a bee. Because BEES.

It’s been a while since I posted a flower picture, so here y’go. This was taken on a hillside above the Oregon coast.

Swamped with day job work; I mentioned some of that here. But I did find time to go see and write up an analysis of Maleficent, and lament how it should’ve been great, but wasn’t, quite. Near-misses are so painful sometimes, and this is one of those times. I lament the film it should’ve been.

I can’t be done with this kitchen restoration soon enough, I gotta tell you. I’ll be at it all day again today, then tomorrow hopefully recording some vocals with Leannan Sidhe. Until then, have some flowers.

It sounds crazy to think that only now have I pulled the last orange sheet out of The Big Book, but I have. It’s for John Barbour. Two instruments, plus voices. It’s the joker in the album – spare, sparse, slow.

Not words you typically expect out of me, but that’s what it wants. I suppose “sparse” is by my standards, but still. Untimed / free tempo, but again, slow – it’s about six minutes long. And I want it to sound as unprocessed as possible – tho’ of course I’ll use all sorts of plug-ins and massaging to make that happen, like one always does. XD

I didn’t have time to post anything yesterday, so here, have the flower I would’ve posted had I made time. These lillies are right by our front stairs, tho’ originally they were from a neighbour house being torn down, and I saved them. They bloomed late this year, but almost overnight went from nothing to some of the largest and prettiest they’ve ever been. Enjoy.

Many Small Flowers

I keep thinking – no, being sure – I have things to say about the latest misogynist murder spree, but I don’t, quite, yet. I’m still thinking I will. Sure, I could rant, but everybody’s doing that – so what’s the point? I think I will have one. But not yet.

Until then, you can have some pretty flowers, listen to the latest workprint from Bone Walker, and I can get ready for rehearsal.

Today’s flower picture is a semi-wild bit of shrubbery that’s on a property line between a house and a commercial property. No idea what it is, but it’s pretty now that it’s flowering. I’m kind of pleased with myself for getting a picture, given my terror of the bees which were all over the flowers.

Bunches and Bunches

Worked out a second, higher bassline for “Song for a Free Court/Anarchy Now” last night. Didn’t record it, tho’ – I’ll need another day or two of practicing it. It’s entirely up the neck, which isn’t something I’ve done a lot of on bass. DOUBLE BASSLINES: absolutely critical to commercial success! Or, more likely, something completely unlike that.

Is my art degree showing? I bet my art degree is showing.

I got too distracted by work and semi-work to write up the second picspam post today, so instead, have this week’s flower picture a day early.

I enjoy this kind of macrophotography. The bud was about… 5mm tall, I think, from memory? Something like that, anyway.

I think this is some sort of plum? I’m not sure. It doesn’t make actual plums, tho’, which really is too bad. I’d like some plums.

An Arc of Flowers

Playing lots of catch-up today with office things, so have a picture of some flowers that I took a couple of days ago. I don’t even know what these are called, but they’re pretty common garden trees here. ^_^

Off to the lava flow to get my hair re-energised before the festival. It’ll take a while, the Creatures haven’t been disciplined lately, and you know how that goes. Have fun while I’m gone, kids.

Here, have a lovely flower. I can’t take it with me, it’d burn up before I even got there, so it’s for you. ^_^

A bunch of plug-in upgrades (not particularly wanted) that came in with some security updates (entirely wanted) may have hosed my digital audio workstation. I have earlier – and recent – whole-disk images I could revert to, but… that would be a lot of work to unwind.

Some days make me miss editing magnetic tape with razor blades. Not many days. But some.

I’ll be debugging all day, I suspect. Here, have a flower picture I took on Friday.

Today is accountant day. Hopefully it’s also water-heater replacement day. It is a day of Things and Stuff, most of which are not that interesting, but all of which take a lot of time, so I will give you a flower, and be off. Enjoy the day!

Columbia sighted – floating city, ahoy! Action stations, action stations! Prepare for incoming…

…oh. Wait. Missouri? Never mind. Calm down, everyone, false alarm. Have a flower picture.

See the cool, soothing flower? Love it. LOVE IT.

(This message brought to you by too much Bioshock Infinite, Google Analytics, and trying to figure out what to do with a really messy desktop.)

I’ve always liked these little flowers. They look so fake, like they’re made of some sort of particularly sun-resistant plastic. I’M NOT SAYING IT WAS ALIENS BUT

…it was aliens.

Remember a couple of months ago the hell of upgrading Ubuntu so I could run a modern version of Jack, so I could run Ardour 2.6.14? Well, that was the latest version six months ago, the first time I tried to upgrade.

About five months ago, the long-awaited Ardour 3.0 finally came out. (They’re at 3.1.mutter now; and having the history with Microsoft, this sounds like a sweetspot for versions.) So now I’m fiddling around with that.

I’ve only been working with it for a few hours so far, but I’ve done a little test recording and editing, and tried to put it through some early paces. It works with the version of Jack included with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; no Jack update needed. It still allows parallel installations, so you can use it without losing 2.6. There’s an installation script, but honestly, you don’t need it; you can run it straight out of its bin directory, which is what I’m doing.

First impressions are really good. Latency is lower. I’ve had a little list of features I’ve wished Ardour had, and suddenly it has them. There are a lot of UI changes, most of which I like, some of which I love, a couple of which… I’m not as happy about, but nothing I can’t get used to. It has updated project formats; I’m figuring out how much that matters, it seems to maintain double root files now, one for Ardour 2.x use, one for Ardour 3.x use, but I haven’t tested that.

I love love love the new project view window.

It’s a lot smarter about use of screen space; I can fit all the tracks of, say, Voiceless usably into the editing window now, and even have a bit of room to spare. “Maximise editor space” is now actually worth using; it’s much smarter about use of screen real estate. Plug-in management in tracks is much better – that was one of those things I’ve been wanting. Click track now lets you set files for both emphasis note and basic notes, and it has an exposed level control. (You could do that before; it was just difficult.)

One way in the past to crash Ardour has been to get freaky with editor zoom controls while the transport is running on a complex project; 2.6.8 would crash pretty easily that way; I’ve only seen 2.6.14 do it once. 3.1 hasn’t yet, despite trying – but the night is still young.

Anyway, those are all just some first impressions. I’ve already made a scratch project for the soundtrack album in 3.1; if things continue to go well, I’ll do the whole album in it, and post new impressions as I have them.

I used to do a lot more flower photography than I do anymore, but I was in Butchart Gardens a couple of weeks ago, so of course I took a lot of photos. So here’s today’s flower picture. You may get more of these over time if people like them.
