Miitomo was a social messaging application for Mobile with use similar to that of LINE. It was heavily inspired by the 3DS title Tomodachi Life. The application's service ended on May 9, 2018, due to a lack of active users.
Messaging[]
Mii Customization[]
This process starts by taking pictures of the user's face and converting them into Mii faces. It takes 12 and the user chooses the one that best fits. The user is then taken to the Mii Maker to adjust the Mii manually. Alternatively, the user can scan a QR code from the Wii U or 3DS to copy across a Mii that they have already created. The user will still have to adjust the voice and personality.
After being created, the Mii shows up in a room similar to Tomodachi Life. In this room, the user can customize the Mii with outfits they own and answer various questions. Additional outfits can be either be bought directly with Miitomo coins or won in Miitomo Drop.
Socializing[]
Users can obtain friends in a couple ways. The main way is to meet in person and share profiles with each other. Users can also become friends using Facebook or Twitter with other linked Miitomo users.
The answers from before are used to share with friends to which they can respond to. Each of the friends are represented by their Miis who say what is posted along with an occasional animation.
Miifoto[]
Using the user's Mii and their friends' Miis, users can arrange the Miis in various poses using various backgrounds and effects. These can used in conversations or posted online.
Miitomo Drop[]
This is a pachinko-like game in which the user drops their own or one of their friend's Mii. Landing on a platform will reward the user with a Mii outfit or sweets. The user may choose which color the outfit is. The game costs either 1 ticket or 500 Miitomo Coins.

Reception[]
In Japan, Miitomo had one million users within three days of its launch, overtaking the instant messenger Line as the most downloaded free app on the Japanese App Store. In the week after its initial launch, Nintendo's shares grew by eight percent following the success of the app. In less than 24 hours after its worldwide launch on March 31, the app already had 3 million users globally, and also rose to the top of the U.S. App Store, overtaking Snapchat. Miitomo later had 1.6 million downloads within its first four days in the United States. By April 2016, Miitomo had a user base of over 10 million users with 300 million conversations between friends and 20 million screenshots taken within the app itself.
