Ice Hockey(JP) is a game that was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Famicom Disk System in 1988 and, as the title suggests, is a sports game about ice hockey. It was the first hockey game to be released on a Nintendo gaming system in North America. The game was designed and directed by Hideki Konno. It was later released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2006 and the Wii U Virtual Console in late 2013 and early 2014. In 2018 the game was released on Nintendo Switch as a part of a Nintendo Switch online membership.

Plot[]

Gameplay[]

The game was designed so that 1 player could play against the computer, or 2 players could play simultaneously against each other.

Each team only had four skaters and a goalie, as opposed to the sport in the real-world where a team has five skaters and a goalie. Each team has three different character types from which to choose. One is fast but weak, one is slow and strong, and the third is an average balance between both.

As in the real-world sport of hockey, the object is to score more goals than the opposing team.

If two opposing players fight for the puck for a certain amount of time, other players join into the fight, resulting in the player from the losing team in the fight to be put in the penalty box for a short period of time.

Teams[]

Since this game was not licensed by any professional hockey league, the teams to select in the game were different countries. While the Famicom Disk System version had Japan as a selectable team, the other versions replaced Japan with Sweden.
