Mad Max: Fury Road 2015

Rewatched May 24, 2020

Remarkable film. When I watched this in theaters, I conceived of it as a reboot, telling a self-contained story set in a similar post-apocalyptic world. On this rewatch, I had the context of recently revisiting the other Mad Max films, and was struck by how well this works as a sequel and continuation of the story established in there first 3 movies. It is a bold and skillful bit of moviemaking, and a testament to George Miller's talents as a director. Another thing that improved for me on second viewing was that I found myself seeing beyond the spectacle of the action sequences and recognizing how these scenes were so adept at building the story and establishing the characters. The percentage of this movie occupied by car chases is tremendous, but because of how the narrative is structured (and how well these sequences are made), this manages to be an asset and not a detriment. This is an exhausting movie, but a very rewarding one.
