Drove an hour and crossed an international border to see this in 70mm IMAX. When the border agent asked what we doing, we just said we were going to see Oppenheimer. The agent looked at us sideways and asked “What the heck is that about?” and we’re like “the guy that invented the atomic bomb.” We say this somewhat nervously as bombs are one of those topics you try not to bring up with border agents. “Then he’s like, “Why are you driving so far to see it up here?” And I was forced to explain that there are only 30 or so theaters in the world projecting the film in 70mm IMAX, etc. Been a long time since I’ve felt like that big of a nerd 🤓. He was not impressed, but let us through.
When we got to the theater though, I felt much more at home. It's was 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 in every seat. Plus we got a collectible 70mm IMAX Film strip with 3 frames from the film. One of the cooler giveaways I’ve gotten.
As for the film, it’s an impressive piece of filmmaking. Hoyte van Hoytema’s cinematography wows in the format for sure. The IMAX sequences are gorgeous. MVP for me might be Ludwig Göransson’s propulsive score that maintains the energy of the film even as we’re jumping back and forth between various time periods. Robert Downey Jr. is a lock for an Oscar nomination. He’s incredible here. Cillian Murphy is equally impressive as Oppenheimer himself and the film is at it’s best when it’s really exploring Oppenheimer’s struggle with the morality of creating a weapon of mass destruction, perfectly accentuated in the closing moment of the film.
It’s also a long and challenging film to follow at times with so many characters, and so many jumps to varying timelines in the story. It still always feels meticulously crafted though, and I think upon rewatch it will be much easier to follow.
The entire cast is stellar. I question why Florence Pugh needed to be naked in every scene....but I also dare not complain. It’s absolutely one of the must-see films of the year. I’m kind of torn on the format choice. I’m certainly grateful I got to see it in IMAX 70mm and it truly looks stunning. I’m just really not sure that it’s like a must watch in premium formats only, kind of film. 80% of the film is a bunch of white dudes talking in classrooms, boardrooms and courtrooms. (but then again, there’s also those Florence Pugh scenes so.....🤷🏻♂️)
