2023 ranked list- HERE

I saw this in theaters last night and left in awe of what I had just seen. This blew my mind with just how masterful it was. From start to finish I was beyond captivated. I love Nolan and I needed to take the night to think about it, but this is my second favorite work from him! I had really high expectations going in and I was hoping this met them, not only did this movie meet them but it surpassed them! Killers of the Flower Moon will have something to say, but as of right now Oppenheimer deserves Oscars across the board.

I wouldn’t feel right diving into this review without talking about the performances. First off, Cillian Murphy gives just an immaculate performance and is the perfect person for this role. Glad he finally gets the full opportunity to shine as leading man.  He needs to win best actor for this performance that he EMBODIES. The next performance that really has me enthralled was RDJ’s. He also deserves an Oscar, one of the best performances of his career imo. Emily Blunt also knocks it out of the park. Honestly, from top to bottom the cast just delivers and the acting here is really something special.

Seeing this movie in IMAX is seriously an experience. This needs to be seen in a theater for sure! Ludwig Görannsson’s score and the impeccable sound design take this movie to even higher levels, heightening the tension throughout, adding layers of emotion to the journey of Oppenheimer. Easily one of, if not the best sound design & score I’ve ever heard in a movie. 3 hours is a long runtime but I did not feel it at all. Nolan’s direction is top-tier and the pacing is great.

The cinematography is spectacular. Straight up masterful shots with mind-bending visuals, one of the major highlights being the Trinity Test scene. That scene was one of the best I’ve seen in a theater. Everything about it was just jaw-dropping, the camerawork, the long silence followed by the booming sound design. I really enjoyed the way this story was told, the jump-backs and forward from color to black and white. Everything was great, but something about those black and white scenes evoked a haunting beauty that only added to the films intensity. For a movie with really no action, I couldn’t believe how intense this movie was. Each scene I felt the tension rise. Every single act was distinct and captivating in it’s own way.

Nolan has his fair share of 5 star’s from me, but in my opinion this is his best. Few times I’ve left a theater completely captivated and speechless but this did that to me. Straight up just a pure cinematic masterpiece!
