It’s very interesting that a filmmaker obsessed with time and playing with timelines in his previous movie would leave out any indication of time for an audience watching a movie based on historical facts. Is color the past and b+w the more recent past? Sure why not.
Christopher Nolan has made an effective courtroom drama that hinges on a character we met twice before for no longer than two minutes of screen time. In fact, I have no idea who half the people are on screen but it doesn’t matter because the masterful editing and gorgeous cinematography whisks you along before it matters.
If it feels like Ludwig Gorensson based his “Tenet” score on “Dunkirk,” this one is clearly inspired by Zimmer’s masterful “Interstellar.” Although it definitely produced suspense, one wonders why the score crescendos at one point when Oppenheimer walks out wearing a suit instead of his military uniform. It sounds good but makes no dramatic sense.
Cillian Murphy is at his best here, but he sort of disappears in the third hour. Robert Downey Jr will probably get an Oscar Nom just for narrating how one magician outwitted another magician. Wait, I could be mixing things up with another Nolan movie.
I’m not 100% sure but I don’t believe we hear a woman speak until a half hour in the movie. And we see one black face in a crowd at one point. Historical accuracy, I know. But just pointing it out. This is the future of the world if Barbie wasn’t successful in claiming her world back in her film.
It didn’t feel like three hours. It moved along at a fast clip. I just wish it took some time to explore rather than pontificate. But then again, we might then see the strings attached to the magic trick.
