Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer

This is one of those scenarios where I fully expected to love it, and then the film proceeded to live up to every single expectation that I had. Sometimes life just works out that way! There are certain sequences and performances that will no doubt go on to define the careers of the cast and crew. The lead-up to the explosion at Trinity is a masterpiece of pulse-pounding editing by Jennifer Lame. Oppenheimer's panic attack while addressing the pep rally post-bomb is the stuff of nightmares and secures Nolan's directorial nomination (he better get nominated, Jesus Christ, I had a panic attack!). The heel-turn that Strauss takes in the third act is a testament to not only RDJ's powerhouse performance, but also the brilliant script by Nolan that's constantly subversive and never dull. And of course, while ALL the supporting performances are superb, the film would be nothing without Cillian Murphy as the film's anchor - he gives a subtle, controlled performance wherein he conveys a multitude of emotions without saying much, if anything at all. Mesmerizing stuff.

I simply REFUSE to believe that this film is three hours long. It flew by in a flash, and I never once felt any sort of fatigue or lull. And as someone who read the book, I knew that the Trinity test would happen in the second act, so the fact that the film doesn't lose steam in the third act and instead KEEPS ROLLING ON is a miracle of filmmaking. As expected, "Oppenheimer" is an example of a film where every single department—from the cinematography to the costumes to the score to the production design to the extras, etc.—fired on all cylinders. I never thought I'd be rushing back to the theaters to rewatch a three-hour movie, but here we are...
