Extremely Critical Belgian’s review published on Letterboxd:
Hi, guys! So that review where I asked for your favorite characters a while back ended up being a pretty big success. You gave some really nice answers and it was overall a fun time. You guys got me excited to do more of these, and so I will.
(Just to remind you, this is not what I want to dedicate my profile to, so I'm only going to do it ocassionally)
What do you think is the most vital part of a film?
I'm not just talking about the process of making it, what is the aspect of a film that can either make or break it when you watch it?
Think about this wisely. And FYI, I consider plot and story to be two different things.
To me, these are the four key elements:
1. Pacing
A film that doesn't take its time will instantly lose you. Plain and simple.
2. Characters
A plot is not always necessary as long as the characters get fleshed out well enough.
3. Editing
This is more than just playing with the scenery or working to a comedic effect, editing is the most crucial part of the storytelling.
4. Rewatch value
I always like to pick up on little details or hidden layers to the story that I didn't notice the first time. This works best when every scene contributes to this with no filler in between.
