Unabashedly absurd and frightening
This summer, horror movies are set to be big hits. We’ve already seen a slew of them released — but not all of them were good. The only horror films from the first half of 2024 that I managed to like were Immaculate, I Saw the TV Glow — and just last week, MaXXXine, among a few others. However, there was another one that I was anticipating.
Only a week after I saw said movie, I did another theater trip — this time with my brother, to see Longlegs. Holy shit, what a film. From writer and director Oz Perkins — the son of Psycho co-star Anthony Perkins, comes a nightmare of a police procedural thriller. It seems like Perkins was influenced by The Silence of the Lambs and the works of David Lynch and David Fincher — and fusing them all together makes for a masterpiece of cinema.
Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage deliver absolutely crushing performances, and even other actors like Alicia Witt. As this was my first time watching one of Perkins’ films, it was a great first impression. His directing and screenplay are amazing. It’s definitely a movie that must be seen to be believed on the big screen because I was hooked on the entire time. I’m not even kidding! I didn’t even use my phone more than once.
The film jumps through different periods of time, with the brilliant editing and cinematography taking the audience through some very unsettling moments. As I mentioned above, it may seem like Lynch was a huge influence on Longlegs. The movie is very surreal in some ways — but it does NOT take away the brilliance of the story. The final 25 minutes are some of the most haunting and dreadful in any horror movie ever.
Absolutely incredible and masterful, Longlegs will seep into your skin and make you feel horrible. Across its entire length, the film will give you maximum dread. By all means — I strongly encourage all of you to see this in theaters as soon as you can. This is by far my favorite horror film of 2024 and I will cherish this movie for as long as I can. Some moments in the movie will haunt me for a while because they got my heart racing so hard.
