I was so pleasantly surprised by this. In the months leading up to Oppenheimer, I wasn’t as excited as many of my friends because Nolan doesn’t always make movies I love, but he does consistently make movies I like. Thankfully, Oppenheimer broke into the upper tier.
I loved how the beginning bounced all over the place. It fostered so much energy and excitement for what was coming in the next two and a half hours. I loved the surreal images spread throughout the movie. I loved the character building of Oppenheimer. I love watching characters work through their future and past actions, and Cillian Murphy was great in this role. I loved how Nolan weaved in Oppenheimer’s regrets through really interesting images and sound design. And I loved how the ending wasn’t what it could have been. While I would have loved for this film to end on the massive explosion, I appreciated Nolan’s choice of ending.
Now this was definitely very dense, and some of the dialogue went in one ear and out the other. But I’m giving this such a favorable score because I felt mentally and emotionally invested despite this. I will probably need to rewatch this at least once (maybe even twice) to fully grasp it. This was great, and I believe a top-three Nolan film for me.
