In the first of what will be many repeat viewings, I remain blown away by the magnitude of what Christopher Nolan and team accomplish with this film. There’s not much in the way of traditional grand scale spectacle, and yet it’s all presented with such precise composition and calibration that it feels bracingly cinematic. There’s weight, urgency, and tension even when all that appears to be happening onscreen is “just” characters sitting in a room and talking. And, of course, when we do get to the film’s most bravura visual sequence in the Trinity Test, it’s a truly marvelous piece of filmmaking.
I’m also super-duper-jealous of the people I know who are seeing this in 15/70 IMAX - or, really, any form of IMAX. I guess part of the fun for all of us stuck with normie screenings is trying to discern which scenes open up to 1.43:1; some are glaringly obvious, but others perhaps aren’t with how conversation-heavy this thing goes.
