Christopher Nolan at his most creatively salient, which might seem a crazy statement given his track-record, but nearly every ten minutes the film jolted me back into itself. It's 3 hours, but not a single minute feels like a wasted opportunity. Biopics aren't usually bad because they're biopics; they're usually bad because that's ALL they are. Here, Nolan takes the whole of Oppenheimer's life and shapes and presents it's events that serves its themes as a movie, rather than a simple play by play of the person's life. Scenes are interlaced atop each other. There is one where three different conversations are intercut.
There's also such a forward momentum in the film. You don't even feel the time. It chugs forward, backwards, and through time and space. I absolutely loved everything that's on display here. The characters, the acting, the cinematography, the music, the editing - its all the best Nolan has ever shown.
The 70mm IMAX was ABSOLUTELY worth it. It saddens me so deeply that after these few weeks, no one will ever get to experience this version of the film properly.
