Oppenheimer is a bombastic masterwork, a complex rendering of a key moment in history. Nolan has created a multi-layered exploration into the creation, and the creator of the biggest threat known to man.
This film might just contain the best use of cinematic artistry put to screen. The electrified cinematography, featuring beautifully created star-soaked skies, mixed with terrifying over-saturated visions of atomic fallout, is something to behold.
The performances are equally as compelling, with leads Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt presenting nuanced recreations of the onscreen couple. As spectacular as Murphy is in the titular role, it’s Blunt’s stoic performance that leaves a lasting impression. The entire ensemble (of which there are many) deserve praise and admiration, providing an authentic retelling of the events.
Like many of Nolan’s past work, the film uses a non-linear technique, frequently cutting between monochromatic court rooms scenes, scientific originations, and personal relationships. This approach is at times, especially during the third act, a difficult task to follow, where litigious rhetoric is commonplace.
A short summation of this behemoth simply doesn’t do it justice. Its complexity can become compounding at times, but its overall cinematic ingenuity makes it a unique and powerful experience. Nolan, yet again, proves his worth as one of the most proficient and interesting Hollywood directors of the modern era.
