Just a masterful epic that Nolan reaches deep down into his bag of tricks to pull out… A docudrama biography narrative that works without any flash or sizzle that is come to define Nolan’s work.
The only close to signature Nolan is the multiple timelines which only enhances the plot. We know the fall as we’re seeing the rise. Nolan impressed me the most with the way he edited different scenes through the psyche of Oppenheimer. The script is also fantastic. Nothing is wasted in a 3 hour runtime even though some parts of the last act seem somewhat repetitive (really maybe the only flaw of this movie).
The real strength here though is the cast. Murphy is going to get plenty of acclaim for his performance as he should. He is fantastic and the movie doesn’t work without him (I’m not sure any other actor could pull this off) but the two best performances are RDJ (showing the acting chops we’ve always known him to have) and Emily Blunt who is being considered to by some to be wasted in too small a role. I couldn’t disagree more. Her character plays a much more important role than some say and is the moral center of the film.
Nolan did it. I’m curious to see where this takes the next stage of his career.
