La La Land

La La Land

COLOURFUL, SIMPLE & POWERFUL.

After I watched this film, I took the time to watch some videos on Youtube, before reading through everyone's (those of you I follow on here) reviews on Letterboxd to help shape my opinion.

I agree with everyone; this film is a masterpiece. It exhibits stunning cinematography, colour grading, performances and music, which is all stylised to create such a pleasant atmosphere. It's all just so elegant. But, unlike everyone else, this film didn't elicit a strong reaction in me.

I smiled every time I was surprised and chuckled after Chazelle integrated something smart into the script, performances or cinematography. But I just enjoyed it like a regularly well-made film. No, it didn't take my breath away, but the film still impressed me with everything else.

I love the structure, the genuine character interactions, seamless transitions into song and vibrant colours. I love that J. K. Simmons appeared for a minor role, and I adore Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's performances. Its story about the price of following your dreams and why you should still chase them is relatable, and with me, it resonates, as an aspiring artist like many others.

And of course, there's the unforgettable epilogue: the moment the two make eye contact before a montage shows what could've been if it all turned out well before it hits us with the reality. Then it ends with a nod and a glance.

There's too much to discuss, but I think everyone's said enough of the elements I won't mention here. It's a masterpiece—you all know it. I'll just quickly note that Mia's belief in Sebastian's dream when he's at his lowest, and Sebastian's sacrifice for both of their success is so bittersweet.

I thought it was gorgeous and meticulous in its craft. Its cinematography, costume design, performances and simple yet effective screenplay all made for an enjoyable experience. I feel it's a movie I'll appreciate more after I rewatch it when I'm older. And I'm going to rewatch it, even if I have to sacrifice something so I can fall in love with it like everybody else!

Mia: "I'm always gonna love you."
Sebastian: "I'm always gonna love you, too."

SCORE: 8/10
