This film was directed by Damien Chazelle and stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling
Let me start off this review by saying, I’m not really a fan of the musical genre, that being said I thought this film was really well made and I enjoyed it a whole lot more than I thought I would. I went in thinking I wouldn’t like the movie at all, but I wanted to watch it because I’m a fan of Damien Chazelle directing style and the cast. From a technical standpoint this film was really impressive. So far Chazelle’s style of directing hasn’t disappointed me. Linus Sandgren’s cinematography in the movie was outstanding as well, I really appreciated the long shots.
I will say this though, the first hour was pretty good but after that the movie got a tad bit slow, however I do feel that the last 10 minutes did sorta make up for it. I really enjoyed the vibrant colors in the movie, and while I was watching this I came to the realization that Damien Chazelle really likes to incorporate Jazz in his movies, Ryan Gosling character is obsessed with jazz in the film which honestly set up for some pretty funny scenes. Now I’ve got mention that observatory scene, wow was that visually stunning, that entire sequence was really impressive. The score was also really good.
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling both gave great performances as always, and the music was surprisingly pretty good as well. I read somewhere that said the film was shot with many long takes so when it came time for Ryan Gosling to do a piano solo or someone to do a dance number it had to be on point, and I was really impressed by that. One of the things that stood out to me were the amount of diverse set pieces, every location feels different and unique and I really liked that. One things for certain though, that ending was not very happy, which I appreciate every now and again.
Overall I thought this film was a VERY WELL MADE musical and Linus Sandgren’s cinematography was very impressive.
