Scarlett Worthington’s review published on Letterboxd:
I watched La La Land when it came out in cinemas four years ago and loved it. However, since I didn’t get into films properly until 2 years later and a lot of people I spoke to about films said they didn’t like La La Land I assumed I was too young and naive to see that it really wasn’t a good film. That was a foolish thought and I was completely wrong, this is one of my favourite films. It’s such a film for the dreamers type of film but it just succeeds in that so much, it’s kind of perfect.
La La Land is just so flamboyant right from the get go and it captures a place and romanticises it absolutely exceptionally. The setting actually feels like a character instead of a catalyst to a story and I think that’s absolute or brilliant. You can just tell by watching Whiplash and La La Land that Damien Chazelle is a man who just loves art, and when you share that love you can’t help but feel a connection to his films. This film captures that in a similar yet entirely different way to Whiplash. As an actor you know I felt that struggle and as someone who loves music you were just able to completely lose yourself in the music and the songs and how the characters spoke about it. I could go on about how brilliantly art-forms are captured in this film but that’ll take a while and it’s not the only aspect as to why I love this film.
I think the relationship in terms of being real and honest and relatable is up there with Jesse and Celine from the Before Trilogy. It’s developed in a way that isn’t forced but seems to naturally blossom and the conflict is able to strike a core as it isn’t biased (you know how you don’t root for one particular character which usually goes into sexist territory, Kramer Vs Kramer being an example). I just find that there is nothing more heart-breaking that the things two people love the most are what break them up, that really does just kill me inside.
I especially think that now that I’ve watched loads of old Hollywood films that this film which is of course reminiscent of that era really hits me in my nostalgia sentimentality but I think even without that connection anyone can feel gravitated on a personal level to this film in some way. Similarly to Whiplash, anyone who’s passion revolves around an art form or in this case anyone who just engages in an art form even in a simple way can feel a connection to this film. I don’t need to spend time praising the visuals because oh my god they speak for themselves, every shot could be framed. Yeah the pretentious film buff side of me said this wasn’t a good film, but the gal who just loves films side has fully taken over in regard to La La Land. It does just make me happy... even though it makes me sad too.
