]]>despite being an American film, this captures the Scottish lad sensibility of being very drunk on a train at night as acutely as I’ve ever seen. I found this very moving and heartbreaking, because in 10 years, it feels like empathy and companionship found amongst strangers is much rarer now. the pandemic and the overwhelming rise of right-wing hatred makes me feel that it’d be much harder to find so much tenderness on trains like this. that made me very sad and I wish I could still fully believe in the innate kindness of most people. when it transitions into the direct confessions of lonely or dying people, I started crying uncontrollably.

]]>getting really fucked up thinking about how all of Ricky Jay’s skills and knowledge about cards disappeared when he died. having existential crisis of all the knowledge and clarity you’ve gained over an existence only existing in brief fragments, whatever you choose to record or share. so grateful that this exists but it also makes me crave 1000 hours of Ricky Jay teaching every detail of his knowledge. the most charismatic motherfucker in the world.

]]>seeing this in a theatre was a monumental experience. I kept oscillating between creative transcendence, and feeling like I was about to have a panic attack. Akerman was not kidding when she said you’d feel every second of it. biggest highlight of this viewing was observing how the cruelties of the world had made Jeanne stupider. why did she not test the coffee to see if it was bad, after drinking a bad cup and subsequently confirming that the milk was fine? why did she pick that baby up multiple times after discovering that it would cry every time she did? felt immense sorrow for this woman barely stumbling her way through mundanity. I thought the crowd would have been way older than it was, the overwhelming majority of the couple hundred people there were of my generation. very hopeful about the future of arthouse cinema after seeing hundreds of young people give up their entire Saturday afternoon for this masterpiece. no walkouts either!
]]>an enthusiastic testament to monogamy. there could be more made of the potential marital drama (or even just the logistics of their romance) in the middle stretch, but this is as tight as a drum and utterly commanding to watch. Regé-Jean Page is probably my MVP, although Fassbender operating as a wife guy equivalent of Oldman’s George Smiley runs him close. a bit confused by the overwhelming praise for Marisa Abela, who I thought was easily the weakest link of the excellent ensemble. Soderbergh’s use of in-camera lighting in this and Presence are astronomically inspiring, and the cutting in the first dining-room conversation is utterly world-class. watching him work recently has been as much of a filmmaking lesson as the ones I’m experiencing on my masters’ course.

]]>this hideous, unfunny, terribly edited and aggravatingly shrill testament to irritation won Best Director over Federico Fellini’s work on 8 1/2. maybe the worst single decision in Oscars history. watching this while sick is the cinematic equivalent of having Philip Schofield visit your house to try and fundraise for the Conservative Party. I think literally every single decision in this film is the wrong one.

]]>turns into a decent rom-com in the last five minutes, which made me angrier that it hadn’t spent the whole film operating in that mode. feels like a YouTube fan film, like if the Cracked writers had made an After Hours movie but not as good as that would have been. I probably would have given a pass to it despite not being very funny due to the strength of the lead performances and the breezy runtime, but man, that Quentin Tarantino impression is an all time stinker. absolutely kills the movie whenever he’s there.
