Hosted a screening of this tonight as a movie that I believe everybody should watch. I think it’s truly a near-perfect film. Terrific at show-don’t-tell, extremely well-written, laced with brilliant bon mots, cool without being smug, stylish and beautifully directed, and maybe the apex of what I consider to be the last age of The Movie Star. can’t think of anyone whose cultural cache right now reaches the level of fame that Clooney, Pitt, or Roberts had in this era, and having them all in one movie? Get outta town. This movie is a magic trick.

Perfect perfect perfect perfect perfect. The most famous actors in the world at the height of their fame, playing smooth, handsome, clever-but-dumb cool guys. An ensemble franchise cast made of the last true movie stars. I just can't believe this movie exists– and that it's stellar! :) And I can't believe I get to watch it three times a year with a goofy smile on my face, saying lines before they happen and repeating "fun facts" about the movie to my friends every time! (i.e. "That song playing right now is 'Caravan,' the same as the song from the end of Whiplash! Those are real scams he's listing right now!") They love it! Don't listen if they tell you otherwise!…

A couple days ago I was grabbing dinner at this nice new ramen place. There I was, content with my noodles, oblivious to the world around me. Before my food arrived, I caught a few glimpses of a movie playing on the large flat-screen across from my table. Images of George Clooney and a fresh-faced Matt Damon flooded my eyeballs, and I vaguely recognized the film based on years of cultural osmosis. One of those Steven Soderbergh Ocean movies, I think? I've heard decent things about them; maybe I should check them out in a more appropriate setting than this. I'm here for ramen and nothing else.
As I enjoyed my meal, thoughts of the movie left my mind entirely.…

"Twenty!"
So effortless that it's almost annoying. Just one great scene after another, never losing its trip-wire-laser focus in addition to sustaining pure pop pleasure. Ocean's Eleven conveys both extravagant surface style and delicate, engaged entertainment. Soderbergh's film never strains seriousness while still offering a sly smile all the way through.
